Glomb's
gem, Hannum's clutch double lifts KU to Region-2 title
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
Monica Glomb (so. Mars/Mars)
turned an unexpected start into a four-hit gem.
Add that with the two-RBI double by
Heather Hannum (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham)
and the Kutztown University softball team claimed the NCAA Division
II Atlantic Region-2 title with a 2-0 win over West Virginia
Wesleyan College Sunday at North Campus Field.
Glomb, who hadn’t pitched since April 18 in a regular season
contest, took to the circle in the final game of the regional
tournament after KU (45-10-1) had lost 9-6 in eight innings in Game
6.
The Bobcats (45-15) had knocked off No. 9 Bloomsburg twice to
advance to Sunday’s action, and after their 9-6 win over No. 11 KU
in Game 6, they were one win away from advancing to face Lock Haven
in the Atlantic Super Regional Championship series.
Their bats, however, were silent against Glomb, who struck out five,
including the final batter of the game to seal the win.
It
was a pitcher’s duel between Glomb and Patricia Moreno until Hannum
drove in two runs with a double to left-center in the bottom of the
sixth.
Moreno allowed just two hits in the game and struck out six. She did
walk four batters and hit two others.
Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection)
led off the sixth inning with one of those four walks, and
pinch-runner
Nicole Colineri (fr. Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood)
benefited from an error to advance to second on a fielder’s choice.
Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart)
grounded a pitch right back to Moreno, who threw to the shortstop
Trisha Thurston to try and catch the lead runner, but the ball
popped out of Thurston’s glove.
With runners on first and second and two outs, Hannum smacked a
pitch into left-center field for the only two runs of the game.
Glomb only allowed more than one baserunner in an inning once in the game and she
stranded seven, including a runner at third base with one out in the
second inning.
The sophomore pitcher started the game because KU’s
Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon)
and
Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert)
both pitched in Game 6.
The Golden Bears will travel to Lock Haven on May 15 for a
doubleheader against the Region-1 winner. The two schools will play
a best-of-three-game series. Game 3, if necessary, will be played on
May 16. The winner of the series advances to the NCAA
Championship in Salem, Va., May 21-25.
