KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Jen Sparachane provided the clutch homer and Dana
Webb hit the game-winning single in extra innings to lead the
Edinboro University softball team past Mansfield University in Game
1 of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference first round
tournament Friday at North Campus Field.
Mansfield (14-19),
a third seed out of the Central Division, led 3-1 heading into the
seventh inning, but Sparachane crushed a two-run home run in the top
of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. Her blast soared down the
right-field line and well over the fence.
Edinboro (25-17),
the No. 2 seed out of the West, left the bases loaded in the
seventh, but made up for it in the top of the ninth when Webb drove
in the game-winning run.
Jade
Thrower opened the scoring for Edinboro, sending a 2-2 pitch
from Mansfield pitcher Kami Bishop over the right-field fence for a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Mansfield used
back-to-back two-out rallies to take a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
The Mountaineers
got a two-out two-run homer from Nicole Yost in the third inning and
a two-out RBI single from Katie McConville in the
fourth to take the lead.
After Janelle
Antes, who singled up the middle, advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt by Megan Trutt, Yost crushed a two-out
home run to center field, giving the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead
Mansfield added a
single tally in the bottom of the fourth when pinch-runner
Jennifer Swarr scored on a single by McConville. Erin
Carroll led off the inning with a single and Swarr was
inserted after Carroll advanced to second base.
Thrower finished
2-for-4 in the game for Edinboro, and Katelyn Gurgiolo and
Brittany Price also had two base hits. They each scored runs in the game.
Beth Mullins earned
the victory, pitching all nine innings. She allowed three runs on
five hits and three walks. She struck out eight batters.
Bishop also pitched
a complete game, striking out eight.
Edinboro will face
Kutztown in Game 2 at 2 p.m. at North Campus Field, while Mansfield
