BOXSCORE |
KUTZTOWN, Pa. —
The Kutztown University softball team isn’t accustom to being in the
third base dugout at North Campus Field.
The Golden Bears
aren’t used to trailing at home either.
But they are
familiar with home runs by
Steph
Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton).
Denlinger’s solo
blast, her 21st of the season, gave the Golden Bears a 4-3
extra-inning win over Edinboro in Game 2 of the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference first round tournament at North Campus Field.
No. 1-seeded KU
(42-8-1), which was the home team on the boxscore after winning the
coin toss at the beginning of the game but in the away dugout, trailed 3-2 in the seventh
when the comeback began against Edinboro (25-18), the second seed in
the West.
Krista
Tedjeske (so. Summerhill/Forest Hills) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and
advanced over to third on a sacrifice by
Maggie
Reifsnyder (so. Philadlephia/Littleflower).
She later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Heather
Hannum (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham).
An inning later,
Denlinger rocked the 77th home run of her career, this one an
opposite field walk-off shot.
Solo home runs gave
KU a 2-0 lead, as
Ashley
Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONT/Resurrection) and
Krista
Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONT/Sacred Heart) went back-to-back in the third inning.
Edinboro, however,
came from behind for the second time in the tournament to take a 3-2
lead in the sixth inning. The Fighting Scots came from behind to win
4-3 in Game 1 against Mansfield. Edinboro and Mansfield will play an
elimination contest at 4 p.m. Friday.
The Fighting Scots’
comeback began when Edinboro pitcher Jen Sparachane
helped her cause with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Dana
Webb, who was 3-for-4, tripled in the game-tying run in the
sixth and scored on a bunt to give Edinboro a 3-2 lead.
Katlin
Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) earned the win for the Golden Bears, pitching all eight
innings. She struck out 10 in the game. She allowed three runs on
five hits and a walk.
KU will play
Edinboro again in Game 4, slated to start at 11 a.m. Saturday at
North Campus Field.
