BOXSCORE |
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— A brilliant day on the mound for
Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert)
and a costly
error in the outfield by Edinboro
was all the No. 10-ranked Kutztown University softball team needed
to win 3-1 Saturday at North Campus Field.
Hoch struck out seven and limited Edinboro, the second seed out of
the West, to four hits in Game 4 of the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Championship first round tournament.
KU (43-8-1), the No. 1 seed out of the East, took advantage of a
two-out error to plate two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Tied at 1-1,
Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton)
drew a walk and
advanced to second on a sacrifice by
Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection).
Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart)
followed with a single to center field, moving Denlinger to third.
After Cameron stole second base,
Maggie Reifsnyder (so. Philadelphia/Littleflower)
hit a fly ball to deep center field. Edinboro’s center fielder lost
track of the ball and it hit off her glove, allowing Denlinger and
Cameron to score.
Edinboro (26-19) went down in order in the top of the seventh,
handing Hoch the complete game victory.
After allowing a run on two hits in the second inning, Hoch settled
down and retired 15 of the final 17 batters. Edinboro catcher Aimee
Sisson was the only batter during that stretch to reach safely on
two singles.
“Hoch pitched an amazing game,” 22nd-year head coach Judy Lawes
said. “We’re happy that she was able to come out here and pitch us
into the PSAC Championship round.”
Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge)
singled and scored on a single by Cameron, who finished 2-for-2 in
the game.
KU
will await to see where and who it will play in the PSAC
Championship round on May 3.
The Golden Bears, who won their
third straight PSAC East regular season title, are looking for the
school's first PSAC tournament title.
