KU SWEEPS MILLERSVILLE IN PSAC EAST OPENER

March 25, 2009

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University softball team swept its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division opener with Millersville on Wednesday at North Campus Field.

The Golden Bears (26-6, 2-0 PSAC East), ranked No. 12 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), returned home after being on the road for 28 of the first 30 games of the seasons. Millersville entered the game with a 17-10 overall record.

KU will return to action on Friday to host East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East contest at 2:30 p.m. at North Campus Field.

DENLINGER AND HANNUM HOMER IN KU WIN

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Golden Bears used two home runs to come back and win their first game of the doubleheader with Millersville by a score of 3-2.

Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) had a game winning solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, her 12 of the season.

Heather Hannum (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) tied the score at 2 with a lead off homer in the fourth.

After allowing two runs in the first, only one earned, Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) settled in and shut out the Marauders for the remainder of the game. Arbogast allowed only three hits and struck out six to earn her 13 win of the season.

Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge) finished 2-for-3 and had an RBI single in the second inning.


ARBOGAST AND HOCH SHUT OUT MILLERSVILLE

KUTZTOWN, Pa. The Kutztown University softball team finished off the sweep of Millersville with a 3-0 win at North Campus Field on Wednesday.

Katlin Arbogast (jr. Ambler/Wissahickon) and Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) combined on a five-hit shutout. Arbogast pitched the first two innings allowing only three hits and striking out one. Hoch finished off the game allowing only two hits and striking out seven.

Together, the two pitchers stranded seven Marauders on base, including five in scoring position.

The Golden Bears got on the board with a run in the second. Sara Golden (fr. Souderton/Souderton) ripped an RBI triple into the right field corner to score pinch-runner Cassie Eiden (fr. Scranton/Scranton).

KU tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth. Kim Morrison (sr. Newmarket, ONTARIO /Sir William Mulock) led off with a single and Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) reached on a fielder’s choice, as Morrison was out at second.

Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) then doubled off the fence in left-center to score Denlinger, missing an opposite field home run by less than a foot. Maggie Reifsnyder (so. Philadelphia/Littleflower) singled home Cameron to complete the scoring.
