KU splits doubleheader with Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) homered twice Thursday, but it wasn’t enough as the Kutztown University softball team split its doubleheader with Shippensburg.

The Red Raiders held the Golden Bears to a total of eight hits in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East doubleheader.

Two of those hits were home runs from Fitzgerald, including a three-run shot in a 3-1 game two win. Shippensburg (20-14, 8-4 PSAC East) won game one 2-1.

KU (36-7-1, 11-1 PSAC East) remains in first place of the PSAC East and needs just one win to clinch the division title, the school’s third straight.

The Golden Bears will return to the field on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. PSAC East doubleheader at East Stroudsburg. KU’s PSAC crossover doubleheader at Slippery Rock scheduled for Saturday has been canceled and will not be made up.

Knopf shuts down KU on the mound, hits game-winning homer

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Red Raiders kept the Golden Bears’ bats silent throughout most of the first game of their doubleheader, limiting KU to four hits in a 2-1 loss.

Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) scored the only run, hitting a solo home run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.

Shippensburg, which scored in the first innings, scored the eventual game-winner on a home run from pitcher Lori Knopf.

Knopft pitched all seven innings, striking out nine. She allowed one run on four hits and one walk.

Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) finished 2-for-3 for KU with a double.

Fitzgerald's three-run homer lifts KU to 3-1 win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO/Resurrection) hit a home run in the top of the fifth to break a scoreless tie and lead the Golden Bears to a 3-1 win in the second game of their doubleheader with Shippensburg.

Sara Golden (fr. Souderton/Souderton) led off the fifth with a single and Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) drew an intentional walk with two outs before Fitzgerald homered to center field.

Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) picked up her 11th win of the season, allowing one unearned run on six hits. She struck out five in seven innings of work.
