Denlinger rocks two more home runs, KU sweeps USP

PHILADELPHIA Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) hit two home runs as the Kutztown University softball swept a doubleheader at the University of the Sciences Wednesday.

KU (20-5) has now won 10 games in a row and 17 of its last 18 games with non-conference wins of 8-0 and 9-2.

Monica Glomb (so. Mars/Mars) and Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) each improved their season records to 5-1 with wins over the University of the Sciences (4-12).

Denlinger now has 10 home runs on the season and 66 in her career, already an NCAA Division II record.

KU will return to action with five games at the Salem (Va.) Invitational this weekend. The Golden Bears will open the invitational with a game against Alderson-Broaddus at 3 p.m. Friday, followed by a matchup against West Virginia State at 7.

Kutztown 8, University of the Sciences 0 (5 inn.)

PHILADELPHIA Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) finished 2-for-3, scoring three runs and recording two RBIs in an 8-0 win in the first game of KU’s doubleheader with the University of the Sciences.

Denlinger’s two-run homer in the top of the fourth gave KU the 8-0 lead, helping the Golden Bears end the game in five innings.

Monica Glomb (so. Mars/Mars) pitched all five innings, limiting the University of the Sciences to three hits in the shutout. She struck out eight and walked none.

Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO /Resurrection), Krista Tedjeske (so. Summerhill/Forest Hills) and Maria Schiavo (jr. Old Forge/Old Forge) each had two hits and a run scored for KU.

Tedjeske had a homer with three RBIs

Fitzgerald, who had an RBI, and Schiavo each hit doubles, and Krista Cameron (sr. Formosa, ONTARIO/Sacred Heart) hit an RBI triple.

Maggie Reifsnyder (so. Philadelphia/Littleflower) also had a double.


Kutztown 9, University of the Sciences 2

PHILADELPHIA Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead Kutztown in a 9-2 win over the University of the Sciences in the second game of their doubleheader.

Ashley Fitzgerald (sr. Kitchener, ONTARIO /Resurrection) also had a big game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Both Denlinger and Heather Hannum (fr. Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) hit home runs for KU. Hannum finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Denlinger also had two doubles and Fitzgerald had one.

KU led just 1-0 through three innings, but scored in four straight innings to push its lead to 9-2.

The University of the Sciences plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but after KU scored two runs in the fourth and four the fifth, the Golden Bears had plenty of cushion to work with.

Mary Hoch (so. Somerton/St. Hubert) pitched all seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks. She struck out five.
