KU volleyball preps for Edinboro in
first round of PSAC Championships
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Kutztown
University women’s volleyball team will take on Edinboro in the
first round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Championships Friday at Shippensburg, the East Division’s top seed.
California (Pa.), the top seed in the
West Division, and Shippensburg earned first-round byes and will
wait to play the winners of the quarterfinal matches.
All matches will be
Webcast online in a joint effort by California TV and
Shippensburg TV.
The winner of the KU-Edinboro match,
which is slated for 10 a.m., will take on California (29-3) at 5
p.m. Shippensburg (30-10) will play the winner of the West
Chester-Clarion quarterfinal match.
KU (27-8) is led by seniors Nicole
Biuso (sr. Centereach, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Erin Waters
(sr. Waymart/Western Wayne). Biuso is the school’s all-time
leader in digs with 2,207 in her four years as a Golden Bear. She
has a single-season record 809 this season. Waters has 377 kills and
123 blocks.
Many of Waters’ 377 kills have been set
up by assists from Austin Kinney (jr. Landisville/Hempfield),
who has 1,076 assists and 327 digs.
With 11 freshmen on the 15-member
roster, the Golden Bears have relied on youth to help them to the
most wins in school history. Lindsay Confer (fr. Wingate/Bald
Eagle Area) has come up big for KU, leading the team in kills
with 380. Jamie Celia (fr. Douglassville/Daniel Boone) has
backup up Kinney at setter during the season and recorded 307
assists and 354 digs. She also leads the Golden Bears in service
aces with 54.
Katie Miller (so.
Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown), Kaitlyn Cunliffe (fr.
Levittown/Pennsbury) and Kelsey Nester (fr. Catasauqua/
Catasauqua) all have more than 200 kills. Nester leads the team
in blocks with 127.
Edinboro (25-9), which defeated KU 3-2
on Oct. 20 in the two teams’ only meeting this season, is led by
Jenna Newman and her team-leading 520 kills. Katie Wilkins is the
team’s leader in assists with 1,534 and Maureen Tilert has 429 digs.
California, which will wait for the
winner of the KU-Edinboro contest, is led by Joanna Nist, who has
418 kills and 389 digs. Marta Hodge leads the Vulcans with 569 digs.
Amber Santavy has 402 digs and 315 kills. Renata da Silva gets the
California offense rolling with her 1,317 assists.
West Chester (28-9) and Clarion (25-4)
will square off at 12:30 p.m. Friday. In their only meeting of the
season, Clarion swept West Chester 3-0.
Kristen Decker leads West Chester with
424 kills. She also has 490 digs. Jacqueline Vivanco has a team-high
620 digs. Lisa Yeasted sets up the Golden Rams offense with her
1,000 assists. She also has 267 digs and 41 service aces. Michelle
Powers has 308 kills and 78 blocks.
Clarion is led by Christina Steiner,
Sarah Fries, Kristi Fiorillo and Vicky Gentile. Steiner leads the
team in kills with 402. She also has 347 digs. Fries has 348 kills
and 347 digs. Fiorillo leads the Eagles with 1,152 assists, and she
also has 268 digs. Gentile has a team-high 540 digs.
The winner will play Shippensburg at
7:30 p.m. Shippensburg defeated Clarion 3-2 in a PSAC Crossover at
West Chester, and the Red Raiders defeated West Chester 3-1 and 3-0
in their two regular season matchups.
Shippensburg has four players with more
than 300 kills — Kali Antonik (400), Brittany Roche
(384), Colleen Toomey (365) and Cindel Young (316). Kelsi Hoffman
leads the team in digs with 316. Toomey follows with 316. Maureen
DuVall has 1,255 assists.
Lock Haven won the PSAC title last
season, sweeping California 3-0 in the final. KU lost to California
in the PSAC Semifinals after earning the bye with its PSAC East
title.
This will be the Golden Bears sixth
appearance in the PSAC playoffs since 1990. KU is 0-5 in those five
postseason appearances.

EDINBORO STAVES OFF LATE KU RUN, WINS 3-2 IN
PSAC QUARTERFINALS

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Kutztown
University women’s volleyball team rallied to win game four and jumped
out to a 4-0 lead in game five, but a 7-1 run helped Edinboro close
out KU 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Championships at Shippensburg Friday.
KU (27-9) won game one 32-30, but two
straight losses of 30-28 and 30-27 handed Edinboro (26-9) a 2-1
lead. The Golden Bears evened the match at 2 with a 30-25 win before
falling 15-9 in the final game.
Edinboro advances to play California
(Pa.) in the semifinals at 5 p.m. KU will wait to see if it
qualifies for the NCAA Division II Regionals Nov. 15-17.
Lindsay Confer (fr. Wingate/Bald
Eagle Area) led the Golden Bears with 18 kills and Erin
Waters (sr. Waymart/Western Wayne) had 12. Their combined 30 of
KU’s 53 kills were not enough to overcome Edinboro’s Jenna Newman,
who had a match-high 29 kills. The Fightin' Scots had 74 overall.
Austin Kinney (jr. Landisville/Hempfield)
had 43 assists and 14 digs. Nicole Biuso (sr. Centereach,
N.Y./Ward Melville) had a team-high 19 digs.
Jamie Celia (fr. Douglassville/Daniel
Boone) and Kaitlyn Cunliffe (fr. Levittown/Pennsbury)
also had double-digit digs with 16 and 12, respectively. Cunliffe
also had four service aces, while Celia had three.
