KUTZTOWN, PA — The Kutztown University women’s volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 win over Bowie State University Wednesday at Keystone Arena.

Austin Kinney (jr. Landisville/Hempfield) led the Golden Bears with 34 assists, 17 digs and four service aces, and senior captain Erin Waters (sr. Waymart/Western Wayne) added 12 kills as KU collected the shutout, 30-25, 30-10, 30-16.

Bowie State (0-1) kept the non-conference matchup close early in the first game, until KU (1-0) pulled away with the five-point win in Game 1. Waters had five of her 12 kills to get the Golden Bears rolling.

KU jumped out to a quick 14-1 lead in Game 2 forcing Bowie State to call its second timeout midway through the game. The Golden Bears continued the rally after the timeout and put Bowie State in a 2-0 hole heading into Game 3 where KU freshmen Lindsay Confer (fr. Wingate/Bald Eagle) and Kelsey Nester (fr. Catasauqua/Catasauqua) combined for seven of the team’s 12 kills.

Nester finished with nine kills and Confer had eight. Confer also had six digs and two service aces in the match.

KU will be back on the court Friday with two matches in the Raider Classic at Shippensburg. The Golden Bears will take on Limestone at 2 p.m. and Davis and Elkins at 6 p.m. The Raider Classic continues on Saturday for KU with matches against Anderson at 12:30 p.m. and St. Rose at 5 p.m.
