Shannon Sullivan (1984-2006)
August 19, 2006
The Kutztown University Volleyball team mourns the
loss of recent graduate Shannon Sullivan, who passed away as a
result of an automobile accident near her hometown of Pine Grove,
Pa., on August 19, 2006.
Shannon was a four-year letterwinner (2002-05) for the Golden Bear
volleyball team. She ranks 5th all-time at KU in digs (976).
Sullivan was the only player to be part of all three of Kutztown's
PSAC Eastern Division Championships (2002, 2003, 2005). Shannon was named the 2005-06 Volleyball Coach’s Award Winner, an
award given to a member of each team based on criteria selected by
the coach.
“Shannon was
admired and respected by all of her teammates, almost from the
moment she arrived on campus," KU head coach John Gump
said. "Her work ethic was second to none, and she was the
heart and soul of our team. Without her leadership and example,
I am certain we would not have overcome a 1-2 start to win the
PSAC East last season (2005). Her impact on our program goes
far beyond what she achieved statistically. Everyone who came
in contact with her is better for it. We all loved her
and will miss her terribly.”
Funeral services were held on August 23 in Pine Grove. Her
family would prefer, in lieu of flowers, donations be given in her
memory to the Special Olympics, Mar Lin Center for Exceptional
Children, c/o Sue Bosak, P.O. Box 30, Mar Lin, PA 17951.

Shannon Sullivan
Memorial Scholarship
A scholarship has been established in Shannon’s memory. The
Shannon Sullivan Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a
member of the Kutztown University Women’s Volleyball team who
demonstrates the following characteristics:
1) passion for her sport
2) love for her teammates
3) commitment to academic achievement
4) integrity and strength of character
 The
2007 recipient of the Shannon Sullivan Memorial Scholarship
is senior libero Nicole Biuso.
Nicole's GPA is 3.25 and she was a PSAC Scholar Athlete in 06-07.
The $500 scholarship was presented by coach John Gump along
with Shannon's parents, Bill and D. J., at a luncheon on August 18,
2007 attended by 65 people in the SUB Multipurpose Room.
"Nicole is very deserving of this award," Gump said. "Not only does
she meet all of the criteria for the scholarship. she enjoyed a
special relationship with Shannon during the two seasons they were
teammates. I know it means a great deal to the Sullivans the first
recipient is someone who was close to Shannon and shared so many
great moments with her on the court."
