Mercedes Van Wagner (sr. Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview
Regional) joined the exclusive 1,000-point club in
Kutztown’s loss to West Chester University Saturday as
her game-high 24 points made her the 11th woman in
program history to score 1,000.
The
four-year starter, who came off the bench in Saturday’s contest,
needed 11 points to accomplish the feat. With a pair free throws
at the 6:23 mark, she hit 1,001 career
points and stretched KU’s lead to 28-18 late in the first
frame.
Melissa McQuade (fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler)
and Rachel Wisemiller (so. Hazleton/Hazleton) also
starred for the Golden Bears (9-13, 2-5 PSAC East). McQuade
picked up her third consecutive
double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Wisemiller
chipped in 13 points.
West Chester
(13-8, 5-2 PSAC East) was paced by Dana Weems’ 18 points and
nine rebounds, and Natalie Winters’ 15 points off the bench.
KU came
out shooting well in the first half at a 48.3-percent clip from
the field and was 9-of-10 in the first half from the charity
stripe en route to a 41-34 halftime lead. In the second
half, West Chester gained momentum and KU
dropped to 38.5 percent from the field as the Golden Rams outscored
the Golden Bears 33-24.
KU led the
majority of the contest until the 5:33 mark in the second half.
From there, the lead changed hands five times, the last coming
on a layup by Megan Stewart with 28 seconds left. After KU
turned it over on its possession, Lindsay Weller hit 1-of-2 free
throws with two seconds left for the final margin.
KU will be back
in action when it travels to Mansfield University Wednesday to take on the Mountaineers with
tipoff scheduled for
5:30 p.m.
