The Kutztown University women’s basketball team had its 32-game winning streak against Cheyney University snapped Saturday
night as the Wolves won 77-66 in overtime at Keystone Hall.
Cheyney held KU
scoreless until the final nine seconds of the overtime period, using
a 13-0 run to put the Golden Bears away in the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference East Division game.
Freshman Melissa
McQuade (fr. Shaler/Pittsburgh) played all 45 minutes, scored 14
points, ripped down 17 rebounds and dished out seven assists.
Rachel
Wisemiller (so. Hazleton/Hazleton) had nine points in the first half
and finished the contest with 12 points and shot 4-of-7 from the
field.
Danielle Jones and
Angel Stephens led the way for Cheyney (6-13, 3-3 PSAC East), with
Jones scoring 18 points and Stephens scoring 16 points while pulling
down 14 rebounds.
KU (9-11, 2-3 PSAC
East) shot well in the first half, shooting 63.6 percent from the
field, but also had 17 turnovers in the opening frame.
Cheyney shot just 30 percent
from the field in the game, but 42 points off of 35 KU turnovers propelled
the Wolves to the 11-point win.
In the early
moments of the second half, Cheyney was able to cut the 37-27
Kutztown lead to a two points with an 8-0 run. KU countered with an 8-0 run of
its own, making the score 45-35.
KU remained
in the lead for most of the second half until there were only
36 seconds left in regulation when Jones hit a 3-pointer to give Cheyney a 62-61 lead.
Cheyney extended the lead to three with a pair of
free throws.
The Golden Bears
weren't finished, however, as Lara
Dellegrotti (Berwick/Berwick) sent the game into overtime, as she drilled an
off-balance 3-pointer with eight ticks left on the clock to tie the
game at 64-64.
In the extra
session, KU was outscored 13-2.
The loss was
KU's first against Cheyney since 1991.
The Golden Bears
next be in action on Wednesday as they travel to East
Stroudsburg University for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
