PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia used a 22-6 advantage at the free throw line
to fuel a 65-51 win over Kutztown University in non-conference
women’s basketball Saturday afternoon.
The
Rams (6-4) were led by Kate Brennan and Ashley Webster who scored 15
points apiece. Amanda Brennan added 11.
Three
players were in double figures for KU (6-5), led by Mercedes Van
Wagner with 13. Vivian Melvin scored 12 and Rachel
Weidensaul added 11. Melissa McQuade led the team with
nine rebounds.
Philadelphia was
22-of-35 from the line, while KU was just 6-of-13 from the free
throw stripe. The Rams also held a 47-30 edge on rebounds,
including 21 offensive boards.
Kutztown trailed 31-24 at halftime, but Van Wagner scored
five points in the first 44 seconds of the second half to pull KU
within two.
It was as close as the Golden Bears would come, however, as
the Rams wet on a 15-4 run over the next seven minutes for a 46-33
lead. Three field goals from three different players pulled KU to
within six, 55-49 with four minutes left, but Philadelphia scored
the next eight points to retake a commanding lead. The Rams were
8-for-12 from the line in the final two minutes.
Kutztown returns to action next
Saturday with a PSAC crossover against Indiana (PA) at Keystone
Hall.
