BOXSCORE
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
Vivian Melvin's (jr. Chichester/Chichester)
driving layup with 6.8 seconds left lifted the Kutztown
University women's basketball team to a 61-59
win over Mansfield
at Keystone Hall in Wednesday night's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern
Division contest.
Melissa McQuade (so. Pittsburgh/Shaler)
had 16 points and 16 rebounds, and
Rachel Wisemiller (jr. Hazleton/Hazleton)
added a game-high 18 points for the Golden Bears
(13-3, 3-0 PSAC East).
With the game tied
59-59 and 12 seconds left,
Meredith Starr (so. Richmond, Va./Monacan)
pulled down an offense rebound, the Golden Bears worked the ball around,
and
Melvin
drove to the
hoop, laying in the game-winner.
On Mansfield's ensuing possession,
Melvin stole the ball just before the buzzer to seal the
victory.
McQuade scored 14 of
her 16 points in the second half, to go along with 16 rebounds
—
her sixth double-double of the season. McQuade sparked the late
comeback when she
knocked down the front end of a one-and-one, then rebounded and put
back her missed second foul shot to pull KU to a 59-57 with
2:11 to play.
After a missed Mansfield
(4-12, 0-3 PSAC East)
basket, McQuade tied up the game 59-59 to set
the stage for Melvin's late heroics. The Golden Bear defense held
the Mountaineers to only two points in the final 3:13 of play.
The Golden Bears trailed the entire
first half and the start of the second until
Wisemiller knocked down a
3-pointer with 14:32 to give KU a 34-32 lead. Wisemiller shot 8-of-13
from the field, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals.
Mansfield
kept KU on its toes all night with Rebecca Pollack and Courtney
Brooks each scoring 11 points. Nicole Pender and Mallory Moore
chipped in nine points apiece.
KU held the
advantage in rebounds by a 43-32 count and outshot the Mountaineers
43.3 percent to 39.1 percent.
Chauntelle Schroeder (jr. Toronto, Ont./Mother Theresa)
scored 10 points and had three rebounds for KU. Melvin finished with
eight points and seven boards to go along with her game-winner.
Starr scored nine points, dished out seven assists and had six
rebounds.
KU will travel to Shippensburg in
another PSAC Eastern Division contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
