KUTZTOWN, PA. (December 2, 2009) –
The Kutztown
University women's basketball team used an early run in the second
half for an 87-54 nonconference win over the University of Sciences
in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena.
(BOXSCORE)
After USP narrowed the Golden Bear
lead to 39-34, KU scored 14 unanswered points and went on a 31-8 run
to solidify the win.
The Golden Bears used a balance
attack in which all 11 players —
four in double figures —
scored at least one basket.
Freshman guard Ashley Wood
(Limerick/Spring-Ford) came off the bench to score a career-best
12 points, which tied for the team lead with
Rachel Wisemiller (Hazleton/Hazleton) and
Meredith Starr (Richmond, VA./Monocan).
In the past two games, the Golden
Bears have averaged 81.5 points compared to just 63.7 points in the
previous three. The increase in scoring is largely can be credited
to the improved shooting from beyond the arc. In an 80-76 loss on
Wednesday to California (PA), KU shot 10-of-20 from the 3-point land
and were 11-of-20 against USP.
Wisemiller knocked down three
3-pointers, while Wood, Starr and
Melissa McQuade (Pittsburgh/Shaler) each
drained two.
McQuade also finished in
double-figures with 10 points. She covered the whole court all day,
with six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Vivian Melvin (Chichester/Chichester) added
six points and continued feeding teammates with scoring
opportunities by dishing out a team-high seven assists. She leads KU
on the season with 26 assists, an average of 5.2 per game.
KU outdid a strong first half of 47
percent shooting with a 22-of-30 showing in the second half.
Kristen Murray
(Harrisburg/Trinity), Chauntelle Schroeder
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Mother Teresa)
and Melanie Mahan (Mullica
Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) each netted nine points.
The Golden Bears
will host Washington Adventist in a nonconference contest on
Wednesday December 9 at 6 p.m.
