Women's Golf
Corbo and the KU golfers
ready for PSAC Championship
by Tyler Schueck, Kutztown University Sports Information graduate
assistant
KUTZTOWN, PA. (Oct. 15, 2009) – The Kutztown University women's
golf team is preparing for its battle at the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship on Saturday October 17 and
Sunday October 18 in Hershey, Pa.
The PSAC
Championships has been played on the par-72 Hershey Country Club
since the 2004-05 season, when the course was known as the Wren Dale
Country Club.
As if the competition of the conference was not going to be enough
of a challenge, the forecast for this weekend is to be cold and wet.
Just another obstacle for the Golden Bears to overcome.
"This
weekend myself and my assistant coach Scott Horoshko will be
stressing the importance of mental toughness," said head coach Rob
Fisher. "Physically
we will wear rain gloves, wear rain gear, so we should be
fine. However, during bad conditions you need to be mentally strong
and not let it bother you. Easier said than done, but I know our
girls are mentally tough."

Some proof of the mental
toughness that Fisher speaks about can be shown with co-captain
Chelsea
Corbo (Harrisburg/Central
Dauphin East), who
averages a team best 84.0.
In only her
sophomore year, Corbo has established herself as a veteran leader
through her solid play and ability to rally her teammates.
"Chelsea has totally accepted and
seems to really enjoy being a team leader," said Fisher. "She has an
incredibly upbeat and positive personality which helps to calm and
relax the younger players. I expect Chelsea to have an outstanding
weekend."
Corbo hopes coach
Fisher is correct and has placed high expectations on herself this
weekend, as well.
"My goal for this
weekend is to shoot in the 70's on both days," said Corbo. "The
championships are something you look forward to and hope that you
can play well."
Corbo had a solid
showing in 2008 at the PSAC Championship, finishing tied for 10th
place with a score of 165 (84, 81).
"Knowing that the
PSAC would be played at Hershey I played the course a few times over
the summer," said Corbo. "I played pretty well on it. And like all
courses, the key is to hit the fairways."
Along with Corbo,
the Golden Bears will have junior co-captain
Samantha Rumbley (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright)
in the mix. In 2008, Rumbley shot an opening round 78 and followed
with an 80 to finish in sixth place.
Competing at the PSAC
Championship for the first time will be freshmen
Mindy Glatfelter (York/Eastern York) and
Nina Antos
(State College/State College) and sophomore
Morgan
Todd (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central). Glatfelter's
average of 85.3 ranks third on the team. Antos averages 90.3 and is
followed by Todd at 93.7.
Despite the conditions and the fact
most of the young team will be playing the Hershey Country Club for
the first time, coach Fisher has high hopes for his squad.
"I expect them to get it done no
matter what the weather conditions," said Fisher. "Our girls are
tough and they are going to adapt to the conditions and overcome."
Rain, shine or
blizzard, Corbo plans to just keep it simple and play the game that
she knows.
"I'm not going to
change my style of play. Just got to keep focused on myself and not
worry about the conditions or the competition."
