Golfers
set to hit links at Rutgers Invitational
by Tyler Schueck, Kutztown University Sports Information graduate
assistant
KUTZTOWN, PA (October 8, 2009)
– The Kutztown University women’s golf team has gotten everything
they asked for and more out of freshman Mindy Glatfelter
(York/Eastern York) so far this season.
Glatfelter currently has the second-best average on
the team at 85.3. She trails co-captain Chelsea Corbo, who
averages an 82.3 and also happens to be Glatfelter’s roommate.
“We do everything together,” said Glatfelter.
“Everyone on the team helps one another, we are a tight group.”
The Golden Bears will need to give a strong effort
from the entire team on Friday September 9 and Saturday September 10
at the Rutgers Invitational. KU will be compete with 17 other
schools, all of which are from Division I
on the
par-71, 6,300-yard
Rutgers Golf Course.
With junior Samantha Rumbley and
sophomore Corbo as the veteran leaders, the Golden Bears have relied heavily on underclassmen. And
so far, the youthful team has come through.
"Mindy has been playing really well, we
had great expectations for her," said coach Rob Fisher. "She
was an outstanding high school golfer her entire career. Mindy was
highly recruited and we are thrilled to have her playing for
Kutztown. She also has the luxury of having a PGA teaching
professional for a dad."
“My success so far this season has come from the
coaches and my dad,” said Glatfelter. “They have been a tremendous
help.”
Glatfelter keeps playing golf the same way she always
has, only now with college it’s a bit of a juggling act.
“The golf part is the same for me as it was in high
school,” said Glatfelter. “Now it’s a matter of organizing golf and
school.”
The fall part of the season will wrap up next week
with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship,
where the Golden Bears look to battle for first.
“There are high expectations with our team,” said
Glatfelter. “We have improved each week and we expect ourselves to
be in contention for the top spot.”
Along with Glatfelter and Corbo, KU will have
co-captain Rumbley, sophomore Morgan Todd and
freshman Nina Antos for their trip to the Rutgers
Invitational.
