KUTZTOWN, PA.
(September 17, 2009) –
The Kutztown University golf team enters the 2009-10 season with
plenty of promise. The Golden Bears feature, possibly one of the
best tandems in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in
sophomore Chelsea Corbo (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and
junior Samantha Rumbley (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright).
“We will have an
extremely young but talented team this season,” Kutztown golf coach
Rob Fisher said. “We want to finish in the top two in the PSAC. I
expect our scoring average to improve a great deal from last
season.”
The team opened its
season last weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. This weekend, they
will travel across the state to participate in the Mercyhurst
College Invitational in Erie.
Rumbley and Corbo
earned all-PSAC honors last season. They are co-captains this season
and will be looked upon to anchor a solid roster.
Rumbley is the top returning golfer. She had
Kutztown’s second lowest average with an 87.0, while playing in 16
rounds in 2008-09. Her best performance came at the PSAC
Championships, finishing sixth with rounds of 78 and 80.
Meanwhile, Corbo proved to be a perfect complement by
averaging an 87.7.
Her 77 at the first
day of the Gannon Invitational was the second lowest round score by
a Golden Bear during the 2008-09 season. She finished tied for
fourth at the Gannon Invite and tied for 10th at the PSAC
Championships.
“I really believe our top two veteran golfers Corbo
and Rumbley are going to have break out seasons,” Fisher said. “They
both worked really hard on their golf games over the summer, and I
think they will reap the rewards during the season.”
Sophomore Morgan
Todd (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) played in six rounds for
the Golden Bears, averaging 104.7 last year. She placed 16th at the
Kutztown Spring Invitational, her second round score of a 95 was her
personal best. Freshmen Mindy Glatfelter (York/Eastern York)
and Nina Antos (State College/State College) round out the
Golden Bears’ roster. Glatfelter and Antos have plenty of tournament
experience according to Fisher.
“The strength of our
team is long, straight driving of the ball,” Fisher said. “We are
also very good ball strikers with our irons and woods. I am more
excited for this season than ever before. I have a great group of
ladies this year. They are all excited and can't wait to get going.
Both of our freshmen are very strong players. They both have the
ability to play as well or better than any freshman we have ever
had. We are all expecting a great year from the both of them.”
