Golden Bears look to continue
trend, compete for PSAC women's title
Heading into its ninth season, the Kutztown
University women’s golf program continues to improve, and with the
addition of a women’s golf division in the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference, the Golden Bears will look to contend for their
first women’s title.
Every year, the Golden Bears have lowered their
scores, including last season’s school-best mark of 339.8 per round
(top four golfers). It was a 10 stroke improvement from the 2006-07
season and better than a 60-stroke improvement from 2000-01, the
first year for women’s golf at KU.
“We should be able to do the same thing this
year,” KU head coach Robert
Fisher said.
The Golden Bears welcome back senior
Lauren
Foulke (sr. Kempton/Kutztown), senior
captain
Krista
Tressler (sr. Fayeteville/Heritage Academy) and sophomore
Samantha Rumbley (so. Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright).
Tressler, who averaged an 85.5, also had a
tournament win, claiming the Hofstra Invitational, shooting an 81
and an 82 for a two-day total of 163. She was 25th at the PSAC
tournament and finished in the top 10 in four of the Golden Bears’
five spring meets.
“She brings great team leadership to the
course,” Fisher said. “She’s very consistent for us with her
scores.”
Foulke averaged an 89.0 last season, and Fisher
is looking for her to become a more significant contributor for the
Golden Bears.
Rumbley averaged an 87.6 last season, with her
best finish coming at the Golden Bear Invite, where she shot an 83.
Newcomer
Chelsea Corbo (fr. Harrisburg/Central
Dauphin East) is expected
to make an immediate impact for the Golden Bears, filling in for
Angie Petak, who was lost to graduation.
Corbo was a third-place finisher at the
Mid-Penn Championships, fourth in District 3 and 14th at the PIAA
Regionals.
“She’s going to shoot some low scores for us,”
Fisher said.
KU will also return
Erin Arden (jr.
Somers, N.Y./Somers) and will welcome newcomer
Morgan Todd
(fr. Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central). Both will compete to gain starting time
for the Golden Bears.
With the new PSAC women’s division, KU will go
up against California (Pa.), which finished second in the men’s and
women’s combined tournament last season. KU, which finished seventh,
will also face Gannon, Mercyhurst, Clarion, West Chester and East
Stroudsburg.
