The win was the Golden Bears’ fourth straight in Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference East play.
Chelsea Bressler (fr. Cleona/Annville-Cleona) had her
part in all three goals, assisting on two and setting up another by
drawing a foul in the box.
Her final assist, a short pass to her right to Kahl, set up the
game-winning shot. Kahl’s kick across the face with 18:08 remaining
sealed the Golden Bears’ eighth consecutive win — tying the school
record set in 2004.
Bressler assisted
Shannon Pennock (fr. Mansfield, N.J./Northern Burlington)
early in the game, taking a long pass from
Nina Zerrer (fr. Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) and dribbling
along the right sideline. Bressler cut toward the box, surveyed and
sent a crossing pass along the grass to Pennock, who after one
touch, kicked it back across the face of the goal for the 1-0
first-half lead.
Shippensburg (9-5-0, 3-4-0 PSAC East), tied with KU (8-3-1, 4-2-1
PSAC East) in the Atlantic Regional rankings at No. 3, knotted the
score at 1-1 with 18 second left in the first half. Rachel Jeffrey
headed in a corner kick from Lauren Estrain for the equalizer.
KU bounced back early in the second half, as Bressler controlled a
loose ball and sprinted on toward goal; however, a Shippensburg
defender took her down, setting up Kahl’s penalty kick.
The 2-1 lead was short-lived as Shippensburg’s Gayle Kuntzmann
scored 21 seconds later at the 49:31 mark.
Shippensburg applied pressure late and hit a crossbar in the
process, but KU’s
Steph Addleman (fr. Chambersburg/Chambersburg) made five
saves to secure the win.
"It is hard to put into words how I am feeling right now, but I can
say that I am absolutely thrilled with our second-half performance,"
KU coach Erik Burstein said. "Overall, it was not the best we have
played, but at the half we asked the girls for more effort, and they
certainly did not disappoint. The most impressive thing about this
team at the moment is that they are never satisfied. They always
want to be better than their last performance. And with that
attitude, we can certainly achieve great things."
The
Golden Bears will PSAC East contest against West Chester at Keystone
Field. The game against the No. 1-ranked team in the Atlantic Region
will kick off at 2:30 p.m.
