Second Half Goals run KU's win streak to four on Family Day

Chelsea Deeter boosted the team in the second half with leadership and direction

KUTZTOWN, PA. (October 3, 2009) – The Kutztown University women’s soccer team scored two goals late in the second half for a 2-0 victory over Davis & Elkins Saturday afternoon. This was the Golden Bears' fourth consecutive triumph. Kutztown also ran its shutout streak to three matches. (BOXSCORE)

Entering the match, the Golden Bears were ranked  third in the Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) while Davis & Elkins was ranked fifth. The Golden Bears are ranked 24th in the NSCAA Top 25.

Keeping the family-day crowd on the edge of their seats, the Golden Bears, (8-2-1 overall, 6-1-1 in PSAC) managed to take 14 shots on goal before Jen Pyne (Wall, N.J./Wall) was finally able to dribble free, and set up Chelsea Bressler (Cleona/Annville-Cleona) for a goal with 14 minutes 38 seconds left in the second half. Four minutes later, Molly Cooper (Palmyra/Palmyra) delivered the second goal for  the Golden Bears, which was assisted by Bressler.

“We were working harder the second half, listening to our coach more,” Bressler said after the game, “We were just grinding it out.”

The Golden Bears dominated the field offensively and defensively, turning up the pressure in the second half, taking 10 shots on goal.

"All the credit must be given to the girls on the team for their second half performance,' coach Erik Burstein said. "We had some great individual efforts, we won most of our individual battles and we scored two absolutely fantastic goals."

The Golden Bears defense, led by junior Chelsea Deeter (Langhorne/Neshaminy), was strong.

"Deeter did a great job providing leadership and direction on the field and the overall performance in the second half was substantially better,” said Burstein.

The Senators took three shots on KU goalkeeper Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) in the second half. Hackelberg had six saves for the day, recording her third consecutive shutout. She has six shutouts this season and a total of 47 saves.

Bressler had five shots on goal. Pyne and Cooper had three shots on goal. Shannon Pennock (Mansfield, N.J./Northern Burlington), Julia DiFerdinando (Chadds Ford/Garnet Valley), Sarah Black (Hershey/Lower Dauphin), Rhea Weaver (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin), and Kelly Rozembersky (Roxbury/Roxbury) also had shots.

The Golden Bears outshot the Senators 19-8. Senator goalkeeper Jackie Krum had 14 saves. Leading the offensive for the senators, Megan Beal and Kim Brown each had three shots on goal.

"This was an important win and I am very proud of this team for grinding out a solid victory," said Burstein.

The Golden Bears will hit the road for their next five-straight games beginning with a match Tuesday at Philadelphia University (4 p.m.). Kutztown has two remaining home contests, returning home Oct. 24 to face East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg on Oct. 31.
