NCAA has Kutztown second in Atlantic Region

KUTZTOWN, PA. (October 14, 2009) -- The NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Committee has released its second poll and Kutztown University is ranked second in the Atlantic Region.

The top teams in each region, with records through October 12 are listed. The final regular-season poll will be published November 4 and championship selections will take place Nov. 9. Selections will be announced at 7 p.m. Eastern time, Monday, Nov. 9 via a webcast selection show on NCAA.com.

These are the rankings the women’s soccer committee will use to determine its selections for the 2009 NCAA Women’s Division II Soccer Championships.

Kutztown (10-2-2 overall) was ranked third last week. KU stretched its unbeaten streak to seven matches and shutout string to six by defeating Shepherd, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Bears are ranked 16th nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Kutztown is ranked in the Atlantic Region behind Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival West Chester. The Golden Bears are currently in the midst of a five-game road trip. They travel to Shippensburg Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Golden Bears are currently in second place in the PSAC East with 16 points behind West Chester, who has 24 points. Kutztown ends its five-match road trip at West Chester on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. showdown. West Chester defeated Kutztown, 2-1, at Keystone Field on Wednesday Sept. 16. Kutztown’s final five regular season matches are all against PSAC East Division opponents.

Sophomore Chelsea Bressler (Cleona/Annville-Cleona) leads the Golden Bears in scoring with seven goals and 16 points. Sophomore Shannon Pennock (Mansfield, NJ/North Burlington) and freshman Molly Cooper (Palmyra/Palmyra) are second on the team with six goals each. In outscoring its opponents, 35-7, Kutztown has received at least one goal from 13 different players. Freshman keeper Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) has nine shutouts, establishing a program record for most in a season.

During the season, Kutztown has defeated four teams who are currently regionally ranked in the latest NCAA Division II soccer poll.
