Kutztown
moves up 9th in the nation in NSCAA Top 25

KUTZTOWN, PA. (September 15, 2009) –
The Kutztown University women’s soccer team is ranked ninth
nationally in the weekly Top 25 poll released by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Tuesday afternoon. Kutztown
climbed 15 spots from last week.
This is the first time under fourth-year head coach
Erik Burstein that the Golden Bears have been ranked in the national
Top 10. Kutztown is currently 4-1-1 overall. Two of Kutztown’s
victories have been against nationally-ranked opponents, Mercyhurst,
2-1 (eighth) and East Stroudsburg, 1-0 (17th).
“I am very proud of our women,” Burstein said. “This
is an exciting day for our program and I truly hope we are able to
continue our great run. I am confident that if we stay focused and
take care of the details we will continue to have success.”
Kutztown is also ranked first in the Atlantic Region.
The Golden Bears were third last week. Ranked behind Kutztown are
Indiana, California, East Stroudsburg, West Chester, Mercyhurst,
Davis & Elkins, Slippery Rock, Bloomsburg, Edinboro and West
Virginia Wesleyan.
The Golden Bears have been fueled this season by a
balanced offensive attack and a tenacious defense. At least 10
players have scored at least one goal. Shannon Pennock, Chelsea
Bressler and Molly Cooper are the only players who have scored
multiple goals for Kutztown. Pennock leads the Golden Bears with
four goals, two assists and 10 points.
Kutztown hosts West Chester Wednesday afternoon in a
key Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division
clash beginning at 3 p.m. The Golden Bears travel to Bloomsburg for
a Saturday afternoon math starting at 2 p.m.
“This ranking is a tribute to the great players who
make up this family,” Burstein said. “Their efforts on the training
field, in the weight room and on game day are the reason we have
enjoyed this early success.”
