continue to fall as Kutztown blanks sixth straight opponent

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. (October 14, 2009) –
The Kutztown University women’s soccer team stretched its unbeaten
streak to seven and shutout string to six by defeating Shepherd
University, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match. (BOXSCORE)
This was KU’s ninth shutout this season, tying the
program record, which was established in 2005. In addition, the
Golden Bears (10-2-2 overall) have not allowed a goal in 590
minutes. Finally, freshman keeper Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph,
NJ/Randolph) broke the KU women’s soccer record for most
shutouts in a season with nine, which surpassed the previous total
of eight set by Mandi Johnson in 2003.
Kutztown, ranked 16th in the latest
National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll and
second in the Atlantic Region, scored two goals in the opening 20
minutes to cruise to victory. Freshman Stephanie Barnett
(Blandon/Fleetwood) enjoyed a memorable afternoon by scoring two
goals and adding an assist on freshman Julia DiFerdinando’s (Chadds
Ford/Garnet Valley) scoring tally.
Barnett opened the scoring in the fifth minute when
she converted a pass from junior Jen Pyne (Wall Township,
NJ/Wall). Barnett found DiFerdinando for the second goal in the
18th minute. Barnett finished her memorable afternoon by
scoring the final goal in the 66th minute off of
sophomore Emily Froehlich’s (Perkasie/Pennridge) pass.
Kutztown begins its home stretch of matches with a
showdown at Shippensburg Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m. The
Golden Bears’ final five matches are all against Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents.
