More about the Ambassadors
Since
2006, Kutztown University and the Borough of Kutztown have provided
opportunities for students to gain an understanding and acquire hands on
experience involving local municipal government. Student Ambassadors
serve a one year term and participate on various committees. At the end
of their term, Student Ambassadors provide a year-end report,
documenting their time and sharing their thoughts.
Although the positions are non-voting, they embody a voice on behalf of
KU students. Student Ambassadors gain rigorous experience working
closely with the Mayor of Kutztown, Borough Council and the Planning
Commission. The position opens the door for Student Ambassadors to be
involved in local municipal leadership positions within their home
community.

"Being
the student ambassador to the mayor of Kutztown has been a wonderful and
eye opening experience. I have learned how a local government is
able to coexist with a University present through a relationship that
encompasses compromise and understanding."
Joseph William Haughey III
Student Ambassador to the Mayor
"The Student Ambassador position is an essential link between the
University Administration and the Borough Council."
Robert Toth
KU Student Ambassador to the Borough Council 2009-2010
"I've learned a lot about the community of Kutztown and the complexities
of planning in a college town. I've met a lot of great people in the
community who really care about meeting the needs of both the residents
and the college and who are working hard to find that balance. The
planning commission is updating the current Comprehensive Plan and is
looking for a way to involve students by finding out what they would
like in the community. It's exciting to be a part of this and I can't
wait to see how this unfolds. It's just the beginning, but I'm sure it
will be a positive outcome since the desire to meet both populations’
needs is there."
Shannon Crooker
KU Student Ambassador to the Borough of Kutztown’s Planning Commission
