What is KUBoK

KUBoK is a coalition of permanent community residents and students from Kutztown University who work closely with the Kutztown Borough Police Department and collectively volunteer their time and talent in proactively creating a safer community and promoting awareness.

Purpose

To create a presence of sobriety and safety in the Borough of Kutztown during peak social hours.

Goals

To assist in patrolling the streets of Kutztown during peak social hours to keep students and residents safe and proud to live in a respectful environment.
To improve the relationship between Kutztown University students and the residents of Kutztown.
To keep Kutztown as a great place to live for everyone - permanent residents and students alike.

History

Ensuring the safety of its students, faculty and staff is always a high priority issue at Kutztown University. This fall, the University joined forces with the Borough of Kutztown to create a neighborhood safety watch program for downtown Kutztown.

Established in response to the tragedies of last semester, and increased incidences of unlawful behavior reported in college communities across the nation, the Kutztown University/Borough of Kutztown [KUBoK] volunteer program matches students with borough residents for a "Neighborhood Safety Watch" which patrols during the peak social hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

The volunteer program works closely with the Kutztown Area Police Department, which provides training and serves as the central reporting location for unusual disturbances and observations made by KUBoK volunteers. Neighborhood Safety Watch is a reporting agency and does not confront individuals engaged in unusual or suspicious activities. Volunteers are instructed to avoid all confrontation, acting only as another set of eyes and ears for the police department. Volunteers are equipped with radios to report any suspicious activities.

The program was created through the efforts of KU Student Ambassadors Stephen Kenney (Speech Communication/Public Relations Major; Kappa Sigma President) and Carmen Bloom (Political Science Major) who serve as student members to the Borough Council, and the Mayor of Kutztown. Additional partners include Kutztown University, the Borough of Kutztown and the Kutztown Police Department.
