Off-campus student life
Living off-campus offers the opportunity to belong to an even larger, more diverse community than you might have experienced through residence hall life. When you move off campus, you automatically acquire the responsibility of being a good neighbor and a good resident. Keep in mind that you live in a quaint but diverse neighborhood of professional people, families with children, and elderly individuals. It would work to your advantage to get to know your neighbors--you never know when you may need their help. Also when guests come to visit, remember, you are responsible for their actions. If your guests cause problems for the community, their problems ultimately become yours. Live by the abridged version of the Golden Rule: "Treat your neighbors as you would want to be treated".
Among the many things residents must share is the responsibility for keeping the community clean, safe, and peaceful. Everyone is subject to local, state, and federal laws. Where ever you reside, your local community will have a list of local laws and ordinances that are strongly enforced. More information can be obtained by checking with the local borough or township office. See the links at the bottom of this page for more information about Borough of Kutztown and Maxatawny Township.
With regards to security and protection for off-campus student residents, the responsibility for security lies with the Borough of Kutztown Police Department or the Northeast Berks Regional Police depending if you reside in the Borough of Kutztown or in Maxatawny Township (i.e. Apex Housing lies in the jurisdiction of the Berks/Lehigh Regional Police).
Additionally, KUBoK (Kutztown University and Borough of Kutztown) -the neighborhood safety watch program - works closely with the Borough of Kutztown Police Department and collectively volunteer their time and talent in proactively creating a safer community. The group helps to deter criminal activity, promote resident and student safety and sustain the quality of life in the neighborhood. During the academic year, KUBoK volunteers are on duty every Thursday through Saturday from 10:30p.m. - 2:30 p.m. during the academic year. For more information, contact: the KUBoK office at 324 Main Street (Borough of Kutztown's Community Development Office) at 484-646-9070 or email KUBoKwatch@gmail.com.
If you are need of a lift home, KU’s Late Night Shuttle operates Thursday through Saturday nights during the academic year and it is FREE. For more information regarding times and schedules, visit the website: http://www.kutztown.edu/admin/shuttle/late_shuttle.shtml.
Student Code of Conduct
It is important to realize that in addition to abiding by community standards and local and state laws, off-campus students are expected to adhere to the University’s Code of Student Conduct. Off-campus students may receive judicial sanctions from the University for behavior s that violate the Student code of Conduct. For a complete copy of the University’s Student Code of Conduct, go to http://thekey.kutztown.edu.
Things to See and Do
Kutztown is located in the heart of Pennsylvania German/Pennsylvania Dutch heritage but is centrally located between the Greater Reading area and Lehigh Valley. The community provides residents, students and visitors with wonderful art and music festivals to enjoy, antiques to claim, trails to bike, hike or walk, ample stores to shop and eateries to curve the feverish appetite plus so much more. While there is plenty to do here, Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore, the Jersey Shore, and the Pocono Mountains are just a short drive away for a day or weekend excursion.
We invite you to shop, eat, play and enjoy the hometown charm and hospitality of Kutztown and its neighboring communities. The beautiful countryside, flourishing farmland and the quaintness of a small town community is a welcome invitation to call Kutztown, ‘your home away from home.’
We are glad you are here!
