The Office of Student Union &
Involvement
Services offers a
series of programs and involvement opportunities specifically designed
for commuter and adult students. The goal of these programs is to
provide unique, relevant and interesting ways commuters can become
involved and connected on campus.
CAR Guide Website:
http://www.kutztown.edu/divisions/studentservices/departments/msub/commuter/carguide.asp
The Commuter and Adult Resource Guide is available at the above web
site and contains commuter program schedules, helpful information and
many other links to resources both practical and educational, for
commuter and adult students.
Commuter Tuesdays:
The second Tuesday of every month is Commuter Tuesday in the Commuter
Lounge of the McFarland Student Union. During the Tuesday 11:00 AM
"free hour" on the designated Commuter Tuesday, soup
and gourmet bread is available for all commuter and adult students.
This is a time for commuter and adult students to network and get to
know each other in a relaxed environment.
Commuter
Corner:
In the Office of Student Union
and Involvement Services (Room 274) there is a
literature displayed in the 'Commuter Corner.' This
display holds a broad range of literature and
University information that students may find
helpful. This literature is also for faculty and
staff departments who need more information on
effectively serving commuters.
Commuter Stress Free Zone:
Stress can build up during the course of a semester and come to a head
during final examinations. In an effort to help reduce stress
and re-fuel before finals, the McFarland Student Union hosts a Stress Free Zone
specifically for commuter and adult students the week before finals.
At the Stress Free Zone students can relax with a free back massage,
open desserts table (desserts = stressed) and a variety of workshops
related to health, wellness and stress management.
Commuter Lounge:
The upper level of the McFarland Student
Union features a Commuter Lounge that is designed with the adult and commuter student in mind. The
lounge has a phone to make local calls, a car pool ride board,
kitchenette with microwave and sink, and bulletin boards for the
latest university and commuter information.
Locker Rentals:
Half-sized lockers are available on the lower or main level of the
McFarland Student Union for a minimal fee (5.00 rental + 10.00 security
deposit). Lockers are a convenient way to store textbooks,
supplies, or a change of clothes on campus in a central location. With
the Union open from 7am – midnight each weekday and over 100 hours per
week, access to lockers is seldom a problem.
Roadmaps:
Located in the Commuter Corner and on-line,
Roadmaps are one-page guides on a variety of topics including orientation tips for new commuter students and academic success guides. Roadmaps are geared toward commuter students and/or adult learners as well as for faculty and staff who serve these populations.
Student Organizations:
Association of Nontraditional Students
(ANTS): ANTS is a student organization
for adult or nontraditional students that
advocates for issues of importance for these
students at the University. In addition to their role as advocates, ANTS members gain a sense of community and connectedness through peer interaction.
Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL): ASL is a nationally recognized honorary society for adult students. Membership in the Kutztown University chapter of ASL is based on the following:
- Members must be matriculated and have completed at least 24 credit hours at Kutztown University
- Members must have a minimum GPA of a 3.75 on 4.0 scale
- Members must be 25 years of age or older.
Commuter
Student Association (CSA): is a
student run organization that, in affiliation with
the
Student Union and Involvement Services Office, works
to enhance student life for commuters at
KU and accomplish this by providing commuters
with opportunities to meet and socialize, to
be involved in campus life and to have a voice
during their KU experience.

Myth: Commuter students all fit the same mold.
Reality: Commuters are diverse in all ways: age, racial/ethnic identity, family status, how they get to campus, distance they commute, living arrangements, etc.
