20 Tips to Avoid Becoming a Crime Victim
  1. Safety in numbers - walk with a friend.
  2. Travel well lit, heavily used paths.
  3. Know your surroundings.
  4. Vary your routine: different routes, different times.
  5. Lock your doors and windows.
  6. Engrave your personal belongings - Operation I.D.
  7. Place identifiable marks on and in textbooks.
  8. Stay in laundry room while doing laundry.
  9. Mark your laundry with permanent ink.
  10. Avoid excessive use of alcohol and do not use drugs.
  11. Register bikes with Public Safety.
  12. Lock your bike with a good quality lock.
  13. Report suspicious activity.
  14. Report all crimes; you may not be the only victim.
  15. Keep access numbers for money access cards separate from the cards themselves.
  16. Limit phone conversations with unknown callers.
  17. If victim of obscene phone call - hang up immediately.
  18. Do not loan out your calling card.
  19. Don't drink and drive.
  20. Use KU's On-Campus Safety Escort service.
