Bear
Net Wireless Network
|
Welcome to the
Kutztown University Wireless Network
Infrastructure, also known as "Bear Net".
The Bear Net wireless infrastructure was
established in April 2004, augmenting our
wired Gigabit Ethernet network. The
Information Technology Services
department at Kutztown University first
started researching wireless technologies in
2001 to enhance our wired network on campus.
Using wireless connections enables laptops
to remain portable without sacrificing the
advantages that come with being connected to
a wired network. Wireless networks can
substitute for a traditional higher-speed
wired connection on campus, they can be a
convenience for simple applications like
email exchanges, Web browsing,
presentations, and file sharing. These
advantages including freedom, mobility,
convenience and access to shared networked
information, without looking for a place to
plug in, combine data connectivity with user
mobility. |

Wireless networks have come a long way from 2001,
including new 802.11x standards as well as vendor
technologies, and performance. The main focus of
Bear Net was selecting a wireless vendor which would
integrate and enhance our wired network as well as
providing state of the art security across all
platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux, and Unix). The Bear
Net wireless network uses the IEEE 802.11g standard
which operates on the 2.4 GHz unlicensed ISM
spectrum. The 802.11g standard can deliver up to 54
Mbps data rates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Since
both 802.11g and 802.11b operate on the 2.4 GHz
frequency band, they are completely interoperable.
Therefore, users can protect the investments they've
made in 802.11b equipment when purchasing compatible
802.11g products. To learn more about wireless
standards please refer to "wireless standards"
section.
