Step #1 | Step #2
Accessing the KU Wireless Network
The KU wireless network is in the process of a major upgrade to 802.11g in efforts to advance wireless capabilities to everyone on campus. As with any major upgrade, a few changes have been set in place to accommodate KU's newly enhanced wireless network now called "Bear Net".
Step #1 - Configure your 802.11b or 802.11g wireless card
* Please note, if this a University owned laptop, go directly to step #2. University owned laptops from the library have been preconfigured.
* Important notice regarding the DMZ area...In
order to use the Bear Net wireless network in the
DMZ area, faculty, staff and students need to either
stop by the Information Technology Services Help
Center or the ResNet help center with a valid KU ID
card to acquire a WEP (Wireless Equivalency Privacy)
key. Please be advised that you will not be
required to perform step #2 when using the Bear Net
in the DMZ area.
In order to connect to the "Bear Net" wireless network, you will need to make a few configuration changes to your laptop.
Note: The following screen shots are for the Proxim wireless card and wireless client utility software. The following screen shots are used for example purposes. Your wireless card's client utility software may or may not look similar to the ones below. Please be aware that in order to configure your laptop you will still be following the same basic procedures.
-
Your laptop will need to be equipped with a compatible
802.11 b or 802.11g wireless network card. If your laptop does not have this, you will not be able to connect it to the wireless network.
-
Next, access your wireless card's
client utility software. This is the program that came with your wireless card that manages the card and your wireless configuration.

-
In the profile, there will be a text field labeled SSID.
Leave this field blank, as Bear Net is broadcasting its
SSID.

-
Along with the SSID, in the security section of your profile there should be a checkbox field for a WEP key, or another security key. Disable this field via un-checking the checkbox. The "Bear Net" is a security enhanced network which does not require a WEP key. All data traveling on the network is encrypted using Triple DES encryption.

- Once these changes have been made, click on Finish or OK and your new profile is complete. To confirm that you are now connected to the "Bear Net" wireless network, click on "Refresh" or "Browse available networks" if your software has the functionality. You will now be able to see "@kun3t" on your screen and should be able to connect to the "Bear Net" wireless network.

Note: Loaner laptops are available upon request at the Front Desk and Periodicals areas of the Library. These have been preconfigured to access the
"Bear Net" wireless network.
Step #2 -
Authenticate to the "Bear Net" wireless network
