As new students begin looking ahead anxiously to the start of the fall semester, our office fields many computer-related questions. In an attempt to save you time and effort, we've summarized below the top 3 questions we're asked.

Laptop or desktop? Mac or PC? The choice is really yours. We take pride in promoting diversity on campus, and personal computing is no exception. If you're looking for some guidance, here is some information to consider before you purchase a computer for use on campus.

In terms of hardware requirements, your computer needs to have an ethernet network port which is standard on nearly all new computers. In terms of software requirements, all Windows PCs must be running up-to-date antivirus software and have their system configured to automatically download and install all Windows updates (click here for more information about these requirements). Although Macintosh and Linux users are strongly encouraged to run antivirus software on their systems, it currently is not a requirement for network access.

KU provides FREE antivirus software (McAfee VirusScan / Virex) to all current students. This helps ensure students will receive timely antivirus updates throughout their time at KU without having to worry about paying an antivirus subscription fee every three to six months. Additionally, educational pricing on software and hardware is available online through Journey Education Marketing.
