Your Desktop (PC and Mac)

PC Desktop:

* To login, unlock workstation, change password or end a task through Task Manager:
Hold down CTRL and ALT keys with one hand, and using your other hand, press DELETE one time and let all keys go.

* Mouse:
Single Left Click:  used to run programs from the Quick Launch bar and to select items or listed items
Double Left Click:  used to ‘Open’ programs or folders on the desktop or in folders.
Right Click:  brings up pop-up menus depending on where the mouse is located on the screen or in a program.

 * To change resolution, set color, screensaver, or wallpaper:
Right Click mouse in center of desktop, Left Click on Properties.  Choose the appropriate tab to be changed.

 * To create a new folder on your desktop or within a folder:
On the desktop or while in a folder, Right Click the mouse, go to New, then Folder and Left Click.  A new folder will show up entitled ‘New Folder’.  The name of the folder will be highlighted ready for you to type a new folder name, type a name, then press Enter.

 * To set your default printer:
Click on Start, Settings, Printers and Faxes.  The printer with the checkmark is your default printer.  To change this to another printer, Right Click on the printer, Left Click on Set As Default Printer.  This is now your new default printer.

 * The Taskbar can be positioned on any side of the screen by dragging it to that side.

 * For single-click-opening of programs, drag a program from a folder or the desktop to the Quick Launch bar.  You also single click to run programs under Start, Programs.

Mac Desktop:

* To Force Quit a program that hangs:
Hold down ALT and Apple keys with one hand, and using your other hand, press ESC one time and let all keys go.

 * Mouse:
There is only one button on a typical Mac mouse.
Single Click:  used to run programs from the Launcher or bring up control panel settings from the Control Strip and to select items or listed items.
Double Click:  used to ‘Open’ programs or folders on the desktop or in folders.

 * To set color, font, or wallpaper:
Click on System Preferences on the dock on your desktop, then Click on the appropriate icon to be changed.

 * To create a new folder on your desktop or within a folder:
On the desktop or while in a folder, Click on File in the upper right corner, click on New Folder.  A new folder will show up entitled ‘untitled folder’.  The name of the folder will be highlighted ready for you to type a new folder name, type a name, then press Enter.

 * To delete a file, folder or eject a CD or disk (3 ½ or zip):
Drag the item to the Trash on the desktop.  Disks will eject and files or folders will stay in the Trash until it’s emptied.  To empty the trash, click on the Special Menu from the top of the desktop screen and click Empty Trash.

 * To set your default printer:
Click on System Preferences on the dock on your desktop.  Click on Print and Fax.  Click on Set Up Printers.  Select the printer you want to be your default printer and click Make Default.  Close out of Printer Setup Utility and System Preferences.
