Celebrating Holidays AND Diversity

Have you noticed that holiday celebrations are becoming watered-down versions of traditions that were once held so dear? Why? Because teachers and schools are fearful of a lawsuit over discrimination or the separation of church and state.

There are ways to overcome this fear, though, and keep traditions alive. The solution is exactly what we hold so dear: education! By explaining traditions and using holidays to educate students about various local and global traditions and cultures, the students will learn why certain actions take place and why certain beliefs are passed from one generation to the next. It isn’t a matter of just teaching tolerance, either. It is a matter of instilling an appreciation of the wonderful diversity that surrounds our students in their daily lives.

The CMC has a variety of resources to help teach about holidays and customs around the world. Take time to stop by and check them out before another holiday and another teaching opportunity passes you by!

Notable News on the Newest Materials

  • The CMC received over 500 new books and over 70 new kits last year! The list of new materials received since the last newsletter is attached. It covers April - October 2001.
  • Web Feet has been well received by our patrons. The print version is located between the OPAC computers in the CMC and the online version is linked on both the CMC Web page and the Rohrbach Library Web page. If you have not become familiar with this product yet, try it. It contains researched Internet links that have been selected by subject specialists and librarians. It also contains a very helpful section called “Calendar Connections” that tells you what is celebrated each month and gives you links to more information.
  • The Kraus Curriculum Development Library that is currently available in the CMC on microfiche will soon be available online! Keep an eye on the CMC Web page for more information. If you aren’t familiar with the product, go to: http://www.kutztown.edu/library/materials/kraus.shtml
