Our publisher reps continue to show their generosity by donating textbooks to our Curriculum Materials Center. This gives our students, faculty, and area teachers the ability to review these items and use them as a resource in lesson planning. It also means that our budget goes a lot further. The total donations for this school year have exceeded $5000. Harcourt Brace recently donated their K-6 Harcourt Math and their Grades 1-6 Harcourt Science sets which are already cataloged and on the shelves. Prentice Hall’s most recent donations include a civics textbook, four world history texts, an economics text, three environmental science textbooks, a biology text, and four American history texts. See the list of new materials for titles of these items and all of the other books and kits that have arrived in the CMC since November. How Long Has It Been? How long has it been since you visited Kutztown University’s Curriculum Materials Center? A lot has changed over the past 5 years. The building was remodeled, a new librarian arrived, and the collection has grown by the thousands. That’s right, thousands of new materials have arrived in the CMC within the past five years. Are you familiar with these items? Do you know what is here for you or your students? If not, please consider visiting us soon. We want to work with you to make education at all levels more informative, creative, and exciting. Professors: Consider bringing your classes to the CMC for an orientation or to work on projects. Also, keep in touch with the librarian to insure that the collection includes the resources that your students need. Teachers / School Librarians: Come to the CMC to find loads of ideas and resources for your lessons. Many of our materials circulate to those with a courtesy library card as well as those carrying a valid KU ID. Education majors: Come to the CMC to find help and information for lessons and projects. We are here to support your education! Multicultural Resources and Current Issues The CMC has recently worked to update the collection with new materials on countries, multicultural education, and current topics like drugs, hate, or even teen sex. We have ordered a variety of books and kits that can be used as information sources for lessons or can be used directly with students. Many of these items have been cataloged and are on the shelves already. Others are still being processed. The multicultural education materials can be found at call number LC 1099. Materials for countries and current issues can be found at the call number associated with that topic. Ask for assistance if you have any trouble locating the materials.
This year, Mandy finally got something more than a “thank-you” from me. She gets a $250 award and some well-deserved recognition. I nominated her last year for this award without any success, but this year I had some help. Armed with loads of good thoughts and examples of her work, I typed up my nomination. In addition, I had letters from three staff members in the library’s Technical Services Department, where Mandy worked during two break sessions. They found Mandy to be just as much of a gem as I do and did not hold back in sharing their opinions. We are thrilled that Mandy was selected for this award and wish her well when she graduates in May. We will miss her, but we know that with her skills, work ethic, and personality, she will do well no matter what she sets her mind to doing. Good Luck, Mandy, and Congratulations!!!! Check the CMC Web site for more information on the collection, education links, and pathfinders. A new pathfinder on multicultural resources was added at the beginning of the spring semester. http://www.kutztown.edu/library/materials/index.shtml
