Introduction

Writing a research paper requires several steps and is an “iterative” process – meaning that you may need to go back a step or two if, for example, you cannot find exactly what you’re looking for.  It can be frustrating but don’t be discouraged!  Here is a guide to help you successfully navigate the exciting world of research…

Choosing a Topic

Researching Your Topic

You've chosen and, perhaps, refined your topic. Now it is time to do in-depth research for your project. Below is a general list of resources to use when doing any kind of research. (For a list of resources specific to a discipline, go to Subject Guides.) Make sure to keep track of all sources you use, and in particular, note keywords you have used to search periodicals databases. This will save you time if you need to backtrack later.

Analyzing and Evaluating Your Resources

Next, Critically evaluating the resources you find is an extremely important part of the research process. As you collect and read your sources, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the information free of errors?

  • Does someone verify or check the information?

  • Who is the author of the information?
Is he/she an expert? Are his/her credentials given?

  • Is the site affiliated with a reputable organization?

  • Is the site objective, i.e., does it have a minimum of bias?
Is the page designed to sway opinion?
Is there advertising on the page?

  • How in-depth is the material that is provided?

  • Is the site kept current?
Is the page dated? When was the last update?
          How current are the links?
