Connect to PALCI
What is PALCI?
PALCI (Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.) is a web gateway which allows simultaneous searching of academic library catalogs in Pennsylvania. If you find a book you like, you can borrow it directly using PALCI.
- You need a valid KU ID or library card to use this system.
- You will be notified through e-mail from "nobody@lehigh.edu" to pick up your requests when they arrive at the Rohrbach Library.
- You pick them up and return them at the Circulation Desk (Access Services)
- You will be responsible for any fines or fees that may accumulate, according to the regulations of the library that owns the material.
Step-By-Step Instructions for Borrowing from PALCI
In addition to these directions, please make sure you read the notes on the PALCI pages.
Preliminary notes:
- Textbooks for Kutztown University courses are to be purchased at the bookstore. Borrowing textbooks for KU courses is a violation of interlibrary loan agreements. The library has a list of all textbooks being used for the current semester, and if a listed textbook is borrowed, it will be immediately returned to the lending library.
- Only students and employees of Kutztown University, who have no outstanding overdue books, fines or fees, are eligible to borrow using PALCI. If you do not fit in these criteria, you will receive the message "Your patron ID is invalid for this library" in response to your logon.
- There are no renewals on books obtained through PALCI.
- The interface will not allow you to request any material already owned by the Kutztown University Library.
- When using the interface, the yellow column on the left records the path you have taken so far in the interface. To go back to the previous screen, click the blue top button in the yellow column, rather than the "Back" button for the browser.
- The interface selects the library who will loan you the book. When using PALCI, you agree to abide by the loan period, fines, fees and other regulations of the lending library.
Procedures for Requesting Books from PALCI:
- Go to the Library Homepage
- Under Services, click on the Borrowing Books from other Libraries link.
- Click on the PALCI E-ZBorrow link, and then Connect to PALCI.
- On the patron log-in screen, enter your barcode number from your valid Kutztown ID or library card.
- Double-click on the blue "Searching/Requesting" button.
- Enter your search parameters in the box at the top of the screen. Use the radio buttons below the box to select Title, Author, Subject or ISBN.
- The search engine works best with title and author.
- Title and author are keyword indexes. This means you do not have to type in the title exactly as it appears, but rather just use nouns and other significant words. Avoid using common articles, conjunctions and prepositions when possible.
- Authors need only the last name(s) in a keyword search. Use the first names if the surname is common and you need to narrow the possibilities.
- Select the libraries you wish to use from the drop-down box.
- Libraries in Eastern PA or SSHE may provide faster delivery.
- Click on the blue "Submit Request" button.
- The search returns with a list of titles. Select the title you want and click on it.
- The next screen will give you details on the title.
- If you wish to request the book, click on the blue "Request" button at the bottom of the screen.
- On the Create Request screen:
- Click the "Yes" radio button to verify your name.
- Select KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY MAIN from the drop-down box.
- Fill in the "Need By" information.
- Fill in your e-mail address.
- Click on the blue "Submit Request" button.
- The "Request Confirmed" screen appears. It includes a Reference number. Please make note of it. If you should have any problems, the library will need this number.
- When each item arrives, you will be e-mailed automatically to pick it up at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Rohrbach Library.
- Materials loaned through PALCI, must be returned to the Rohrbach Library Circulation Desk by the date due, marked on the blue paper band on the cover of the book.
