REMOVING BIAS LANGUAGE
Students and scholarly writers (and by extension,
speakers) are obliged to use appropriate language when
presenting their work. The
American Psychological Association posts guidelines
intended “to ensure clear and consistent presentation of
written material.” Presently, working papers on avoiding
biased language are available online in advance of APA’s
expanded treatment of the subject in its next edition of
the
APA Publication Manual. In order to adequately
describe research, present analysis, compare data and
designate membership within or outside of groups under
examination, and to report phenomena, consistency in
references and terminology for
race/ethnicity,
gender/sexuality and for
disabilities is essential. Links from this page are
offered for convenience of users.
