LOCK HAVEN vs. KUTZTOWN IN “OTHER” PA SHOWDOWN TUESDAY

Tuesday’s showdown in the Keystone State will give the winner the inside track to glory. Clinton vs. Obama? Think again. It’s Lock Haven vs. Kutztown, and this showdown will take place on the softball diamond, not in the voting booth. Two of the best Division II softball teams in the country will square off in a doubleheader today at KU’s North Campus Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The game will be webcast on the Golden Bear Network.  Click here to listen.

"RACE, GENDER, AND POLITICS," a panel discussion will be held 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 23 in 262 Boehm. The panelists are Dr. Deb Sieger, Dr. Joe Ampry, and Dr. Glenn Richardson. This panel discussion is the final part of an independent study project by Danielle Martin and Melanie Iacobino. Please join us and encourage your students to join us. After the primaries on Tuesday, we should have some interesting discussions.

On Thursday, April 24, at approximately 12:45-1 p.m., ROTC will be landing a CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter between Lytle Hall and the Academic Forum. This helicopter will be picking up some of our cadets to take them to training at Fort Indiantown Gap. Everyone is encouraged to come out and watch it land.

"What are you going to do to end the silence?"

National Day of Silence is on Friday, April 25. The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying, and harassment in schools. This year’s event will be held in memory of Lawrence King, a California eighth-grader who was shot and killed Feb. 12 by a classmate because of his sexual orientation and gender expression. Students will come together on April 25 to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. (www.dayofsilence.org) There will be a table in the Student Union Building on Friday with more information and buttons. Please respect those taking a vow of silence on this day.

Congratulations to the KU men’s rugby team, which finished in the final eight at the national championship tournament April 18-19 in Albuquerque, N.M. The team won its first-round game 27-23 over Bowling Green on Friday.  In the quarterfinals, Kutztown jumped out to a 22-0 lead over St. Mary’s (Cal.), but lost 37-25.

Professional writing major earns Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant

Brian Robinson, '10, a professional writing major, has won a $1,000 Study Abroad Grant from Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society. To earn this distinction, Robinson placed in the top 50 of 350 applicants. He will use the application to study in Japan this year.

Congratulations to Karen Wertz, KU geography major, and members of the Middle States Geography Bowl team for winning the national championship at the Association of American Geographers annual meeting.  The meeting was held April 15-19 in Boston, Mass.

PERSONALS


I am saddened to inform you of the untimely passing on April 15, 2008 of Mr. Ulysses Connor, Esq., Professor in the Department of Academic Advisement.

Funeral Arrangements have been scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, (5018 Constance St., New Orleans, LA). Viewing from  8-10 a.m. and service from 10-11 a.m.

Condolences may be sent to his niece Ms. Yvette Wing, at  P.O. Box 829 Rockville, MD 20848. A memorial service on campus is being planned for early next week. Details will be shared through the Daily Brief.

CommUnity Yard Sale:  Put Your Junk in Our Trunk

During the week of April 28-May 2, volunteers of the Off Campus Advisory Council (OCAC) will be available to collect unwanted but still useable items from KU students, faculty, and staff, as well as community residents. Instead of throwing out unwanted furniture, clothing, books, household items, toys, and etc., donate them to us. Pick up locations must be within the Kutztown Borough. Items will be for sale (by donation) at the kitchen building in the Kutztown Fairgrounds from May 5–9, noon–4 p.m., and on May 10–11, from noon-6 p.m. All proceeds will benefit FRIEND, INC.

Register Now for the Great Golden Bear Golf Scramble

Entry forms are currently available for the Tenth Annual Great Golden Bear Golf Scramble. This year’s scramble will be held on Friday, June 6, at Willow Hollow Golf Course in Leesport, Pa. The shotgun start at Willow Hollow will be 1 p.m.  The entry fee for a foursome is $400, and twosomes can enter at $225. The fee includes a tee prize, a pre-scramble lunch, driving range pass and discount at Sittler Golf, the ninth-hole beverage stop, post-scramble barbeque and awards ceremony, greens and cart fees, special contests, and a chance to win great prizes. Entry forms can be obtained by calling the athletic advancement office at ext. 3-4755, or via e-mail at ogeka@kutztown.edu. Proceeds from the scramble benefit the KU athletic scholarship fund. The scramble is limited to 36 foursomes, and has been a sellout for nine years. Please register early.

Know the Code! The Student Code of Conduct is the document published in student handbook that outlines the behavioral expectations of students. The Student Code of Conduct is currently under review and is being redeveloped in an effort to become a more effective and responsive tool that advocates personal responsibility and student accountability. Learn more about these changes and participate in a "Q&A" on Thursday, April 24, at 2 p.m. in 218B McFarland Student Union. A second session will also take place on Tuesday, April 29, at 11 a.m. in 223 McFarland Student Union.

PASSHE Undergraduate Women’s Leadership Institute - Applications are now being accepted for the PASSHE Undergraduate Women’s Leadership Institute 2008 which will take place from June 22-27 at the McKeever Environmental Learning Center near Slippery Rock University. This intensive leadership experience is geared to undergraduate women in any major field of study and provides a forum for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to nurture the leadership potential of women students. It creates an experience that empowers women as leaders, challenges women to realize their full potential as leaders, and connects women with other women who are committed to social change. The workshop sessions are designed to take a student from her current skill level to a higher level of awareness and ability in the areas of communication, leadership, interpersonal development and community action. Costs for the program are underwritten by the PASSHE Women’s Consortium and the Student Affairs Officers from the 14 PASSHE institutions. Students selected to participate need only provide their own transportation, personal items, and time. Applications are now available online at http://www.kutztown.edu/divisions/studentservices/do/leadership.aspx with a submission deadline of Monday, April 28.
