EVENTS

Total Eclipse of the Moon, Feb. 20-21, visible from KU (and U.S.)

Weather permitting, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, viewers throughout North America will be treated to a total eclipse of the moon. Circumstances are especially favorable for viewing this event, which begins in the early evening and ends soon after midnight, Eastern Standard Time. The moon will be fairly high in the eastern sky throughout the eclipse.

The partial phase of the eclipse begins at 8:43 p.m., when the full moon first enters the Earth’s umbral shadow. The total phase begins at 10 p.m., when all of the moon becomes eclipsed. But due to scattered reddish waves of light reaching the moon’s surface, after traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere, the totally eclipsed moon won’t be black, but rather a dull coppery reddish color. Mid-eclipse occurs at 10:26 p.m., and the total phase ends by 10:52 p.m. The remaining partial phases will continue until 12:09 a.m.

If the sky is clear, the KU Observatory will host a public viewing of the eclipse throughout its duration. Close to the moon will be the planet Saturn (a few degrees to the upper left) and the bright star Regulus (several degrees to the upper right). Using a pair of binoculars will enhance views of the eclipsed moon.

Questions may be directed to Jordan Marché, Department of Physical Sciences, at (610) 683-4438.

Black Heritage Month Celebration

Carter G Woodson, the son of former slaves and a Harvard-trained historian, is known as the "father" of African American History Month. He successfully launched a bold campaign of public education and advocacy on the one hand, and research and publication to gain scholarly acceptance of the history of African peoples on the other. He researched his dissertation at the Library of Congress, where he was encouraged by Manuscript Division Chief J. Franklin Jameson to pursue his goals. His legacy lives on in the study and teaching of African-American history and in the continuing struggle of African-Americans for recognition and equality.
