EVENTS


The College of Visual and Performing Arts, along with the Department of Music, is pleased to present the Annual Faculty Recital to benefit the Rudolf and Flora M. Wertime Music Scholarship Fund. The recital is on Monday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Georgian Room. Please join us for an evening of diverse musical selections performed by Department of Music faculty. Admission is $10 for the general public and $2 for KU Students.

The noted figurative painter, Jerome Witkin, will be presenting a public lecture on Monday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the McFarland Student Union Alumni Auditorium. Witkin is one of the most highly regarded contemporary representational painters. His work can be found in more than 30 museum collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Hirshhorn Museum, and The American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was recently the subject of a feature article in Art In America magazine. Witkin's lecture is sponsored by the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Department of Fine Arts. The lecture is free and open to the public. The College of Visual and Performing Arts "Visiting Artist Lecture Program" presents Kristen Accola, on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. in 261 Boehm. Kristen Accola is curator of a current exhibition, "CUBA-Artists Experience Their Country," at the Hunterdon Museum of Art, Clinton, N.J.  She will talk about the 25 Cuban artists in the exhibit, visiting their studios, and attending the Havana Biennial.

Mexico 2007 Travelers and Their Sketchbooks: an exhibit of artwork by KU students from the 2007 Mexico Communication Design sketchbook course.

A reception will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the KU Honors Hall Lobby, 181 College Blvd. The exhibition will be on display at the Honors Hall during normal business hours until March 18. Seats are available for 2008's offering of CDE 375: "The Travelers Sketchbook, Drawing on Location in Mexico." Prospective students are welcome to meet the 2007 participants to learn more about the program.

Program summary: May 14-31, 2008. The course includes a one week home-stay with a Mexican family in Guanajuato and remaining nights at tourist class hotels in Querro and San Miguel de Allende. Excursions include a silver mine, an archeological zone high in the Sierra Madres, a cactus preserve, a ceramics studio, and more. Men’s Basketball in Action on Wednesday! 

The KU Men’s Basketball team will be in action on Wednesday, Feb. 27, with a non-conference match up against Columbia Union. Game time is 7 p.m. at Keystone Arena. Come cheer on the Golden Bears as they get ready for the PSAC Playoffs!

The Department of Speech Communication and Theatre will present the play "Anatomy of Gray" at the Rickenbach Theatre on Feb. 28 - Mar. 1 at 8 p.m. and Mar. 2 at 2 p.m. Advance tickets are $10 for students, $15 for adults and are available at the McFarland Student Union information desk by calling 610-683-4092, or on the Web at www.kutztown.edu/news/cultural/. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $15.

The Psychology Department and Psi Chi has booked Dr. Peter Langman, director of psychology at KidsPeace, to present "Pathways to Rampage: The Psychology of School Shooters." Based on his research into actual school shooters, as well as his personal experience evaluating potential school shooters, Dr. Peter Langman will present a typology of these young murderers. Comparing the family backgrounds, personalities, and psychiatric symptoms of these youths, Dr. Langman will delineate three categories of school shooters: the psychotic, the psychopathic, and the traumatized.

The event is Monday, March 24 (reading day), from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, McFarland Student Union.

Black Heritage Month Celebration 

Even though an extreme shortage of nurses in World War II forced the federal government to seriously consider drafting white nurses, defense officials remained reluctant to recruit black nurses throughout the war. Allowing black nurses to care for whites was considered a violation of social norms. The National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses, led by Mabel Staupers, and rights groups like the NAACP, loudly protested racial policies in the Army Nurse Corps and the military in general. The Non-Instructional Leadership Development Group will be hosting the workshop “Healthy Snacking” on Feb. 29.

ADMINISTRATIVE


FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) Workshop – All faculty, staff, and graduate assistants are invited to attend an informational workshop on FERPA requirements. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, known as FERPA, governs the release of student information to parties inside and outside of the university. It is imperative that all members of the university community are aware of how FERPA affects information that can be provided about students. Newer faculty and staff members, who may not have attended prior university-sponsored FERPA workshops, are especially encouraged to attend. The workshop will take place Tuesday, March 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 250 McFarland Student Union. College of Education, Art and Music Education Majors: Are you crossing 48 earned cumulative credits by the end of the spring 2008 semester or are currently a pre-candidacy student? If you answered “yes,” an "Application for Admission to Teacher Candidacy" must be submitted to your department chair office by March 1. An application needs to be completed whether you are currently a pre-candidacy student or you will first complete 48 credits by May 2008. Applications can be obtained from your department chair office or outside the dean’s office, 231 Beekey. Post Baccalaureate certification teacher candidates do not have to complete the Application for Admission to Teacher Candidacy, but must still complete the requirements for teacher candidacy as stated in their acceptance letter.
