Black Heritage Month Celebration

The Harlem Renaissance artists sought out a unique African centered culture for blacks and to simultaneously improve relations with the whites. This challenge was to communicate the ills of racism with art rather than essay. Harlem's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is one of the world’s foremost facilities dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of black cultural artifacts. A branch of the New York Public Library since 1925, the Schomburg Center has grown to comprise over five million books, microforms, black newspapers and current periodicals from around the world.
