Middle States Decennial Accreditation - Update

Beginning on Sunday, March 30, and ending on Wednesday, April 2, the following individuals will be conducting a Middle States Commission on Higher Education reaccreditation visit:  1) Arnold Speert (Chair), President, William Paterson University; 2) Linda Best, Professor & Chair, Department of English, Kean University; 3) Betty Crockett, Associate Vice President, Administration and Finance, Salisbury University; 4) Elizabeth Davis-Russell, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, State University of New York College at Cortland; 5) Charles Fey, Vice President for Student Affairs, University of Akron; 6) Jay Harper, Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Rowan University; 7) Judith Lin Hunt, Dean, Library Sciences, Montclair State University;  8) Shirish Shah, Professor, Chemistry, Towson University; and, 9) Jason Scorza, Director, School of English, Philosophy and Humanities, Fairleigh Dickinson University.  James Moran, Senior Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer, is representing PASSHE.

Please save the date! The Faculty/Professional Staff Retirement and Emeriti Recognition Dinner will be held on Saturday, May 3, in the Multipurpose Room of the McFarland Student Union. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Formal invitations will be mailed at a later date. The Student Union Art Gallery is currently showing "A Woman's Place" featuring quilt installation by former art gallery coordinator Julie Umbenhauer. The show will be on display from today through April 11. There is a catered opening reception on Monday, March 31, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Come to the Spring Fine Arts and Crafts Festival, being held by the Reading Berks Guild of Crafts in partnership with PA German Heritage Center, on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Field House. Students, faculty, and staff with valid KU ID cards will be admitted for free. This Saturday and Sunday, more than 80 master tradition folk artists, contemporary craftsmen, and fine artists will be showcasing their crafts and artwork. Every year, this show features traditional, contemporary crafts, and fine art work. This year's show also provides an opportunity to senior art and craft students from KU to display and sell their work.

Work offered for sale will be wood carving, scherenschnitte, metalwork, theorem and folk art painting, red-ware pottery, fiber work, stained glass, rug hooking, jewelry, and much more!


Tune in this Saturday night at 9 p.m. for the Multicultural Center Radio Show on Kutztown University Radio (KUR). This week, by popular request, we sit down once again with scholar, teacher, and poet Dr. Herbert Martin from the University of Dayton, Ohio. Martin recently spoke at KU, sharing the poems and writings of nationally acclaimed poet and novelist Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Then stay tuned at 9:15 p.m. for a special Women’s Center feature featuring an interview with “The Century Project” photographer, Frank Cordelle. Cordelle was brought to campus this past week by “The Diversity Fest Speaker’s Series,” and his exhibit featured 25 years of photographing the nude female truthfully. Find out what inspired Cordelle to begin the project and find out why most viewers of the exhibit were moved to tears.

Then stay tuned at 9:30 p.m. for our popular syndicated women’s issues talk show, “Fifty One Percent.”

Allies of Kutztown University will be holding their third annual Drag Show on April 2, in the Multipurpose Room in the McFarland Student Union Building at 7 p.m. The evening will include Drag Performances, 'Vogue' competition and history, and prizes! This event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed and will be made to the Crimes Victims Council of the Lehigh Valley.


Jordan Sonnenblick, author of "Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie," "Notes from the Midnight Driver," "Zen and the Art of Faking It," and "Dodger and Me," will be speaking on April 4. The event, which includes dinner, begins at 6 p.m. in the South Dining Hall. Student  Union and Involvement Services is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 academic year. We are looking for students who desire to work as an art gallery manager, office assistant, information desk assistant, building assistant/manager, graphic artist, web designer, or production assistant. The job descriptions and requirements can be reviewed in 274 McFarland Student Union. The Diversity Fest Speaker's Series presents "The Century Project," a photography installation by Frank Cordelle, today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 250 McFarland Student Union. This is a walk-through installation of 25 years of photographing the female nude truthfully. The installation takes about 45 minutes to go through.

The Chambliss Faculty Research Award address will be presented at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in Boehm 261.  The title of the talk is “The Dinosaur Shake Rattle and Roll” by Dr. Edward Simpson, department of physical sciences.  The talk will highlight recent work in southern Utah during the Cretaceous - time of the dinosaurs.  Highlighted will be our reconstruction of earthquakes and possible epicenters that shook, rattled, and rolled these giants of the past.

The 2008 Student Leader of the Year Award nominations from faculty and staff are now being accepted. 

Criteria for eligibility include: good academic and disciplinary standing; a member of the Student Government Association (paid student activity fee); demonstrate excellence in service to the community and good university citizenship and cooperation; demonstrate evidence of leadership and future leadership by actively participating in one or more of the following: (1) an active member of an SGA Gold, Maroon, or registered organization at a level that is meaningful, influential and makes a significant difference in the quality of the organization or activity, (2) elected officer in one or more student organizations directly affecting and enhancing the personal/professional life of university students, (3) a student employee within the university who significantly impacts the quality of campus life.

Kutztown University and the Borough of Kutztown are pleased to announce an open application process for a Student Ambassador non-voting position within the Borough Council of the borough of Kutztown. This position is open to any full-time KU student and will begin Sept. 1 for a one-year term. Please be advised that the U.S. General Services Administration's (GSA) Privately Owned Vehicle reimbursement rate has increased to 50.5 cents per mile effective March 19. In accordance with Board of Governors’ Policy 1986-07-A, Travel Expense Regulations, the reimbursement rate for use of a personal automobile for official System travel also has increased to 50.5 cents per mile effective March 19. (For travel occurring from February 1, 2007, through March 18, 2008, the reimbursement rate is 48.5 cents per mile.)

Please also be advised that when submitting travel reimbursement forms and check requisition forms that you no longer need to provide social security numbers on any of these forms. For more information, contact the Accounts Payable office at ext. 3-4147.
