Literacy scholar, publisher and education activist Stephen Parks will present the free talk, “Once I Was a Washing Machine: Worker/Writer Alliances at the Edge of an Economic Abyss,” at 1 p.m., Friday, April 3, in McFarland Student Union Alumni Auditorium. Parks joins us as part of the annual KU Composition Conference, sponsored by the English Department. The 2009 conference theme is “Writers @ Work.”
Parks notes that his books, teaching, and professional life seek to “link the literacy goals of community organization to the work of the university.” His most recent book, “Class Politics: The Movement for the Students’ Right to Their Own Language,” examines the field of composition studies and its relation to contemporary American political action. Parks has vigorously championed the potential of writing as a vehicle for progressive social change.
He is currently Associate Professor of Writing and Rhetoric at Syracuse
University and the Director of Teachers for a Democratic Culture, a coalition of
academics and professionals committed to education as a force for and a site of
cultural pluralism. Parks also founded New City Community Press, a small
publishing collective devoted to the production and distribution of texts
emerging from disenfranchised and marginalized communities, especially the urban
poor and immigrant groups.
Please join us for what will surely be a lively discussion!
