Happy Cinco de Mayo! Many people confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexico’s Independence. Mexico’s War of Independence from Spain began with a revolution on September 16, 1810 and lasted until 1821.  Cinco de Mayo, 1862 is an historical date and is celebrated differently in the United States and in Mexico.  The 5th of May marks the day when the much smaller, less equipped Mexican forces defeated the French army in 1862, delaying French occupancy of Mexico City in the Battle of Puebla.  In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo  is a tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives and is celebrated in some parts of the country but more elaborately in the state of Puebla.  In the United States, it has become a recognition and celebration of the culture and traditions of Americans of Mexican ancestry.
