Comverge, our Demand Response Service provider, has scheduled an electrical demand reduction test for today, Thursday, August 19, at 3 p.m. Their notification is as follows:

“Comverge will be issuing a mandatory one-hour PJM Capacity test event in your zone this Thursday, August 19, beginning at 3 p.m. EDT.  The test event will be conducted from 3- 4 p.m. EDT.  Please ensure full curtailment starting no later than 3 p.m. EDT  and continuing through 4 p.m. EDT.  After the event concludes you may resume normal operations.”

Kutztown University has agreed to an annual one-hour test which must be conducted during the summer hours. Over the past few months when asked to reduce electrical consumption the University has responded very well and we are requesting a similar response for the test.

Facilities is asking the KU campus community to initiate the following conservation activities from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. today:

·         Turn off all unnecessary appliances such as coffee pots, radios, TV’s, fans, unused refrigerators, etc.

·         If you are not currently using your computer, turn off the screen.  If you are not using it at all or can avoid using it the remainder of the day, turn it off completely.

·         Turn off as many lights as possible.

·         If you have operable thermostats, raise the temperature.

·         If your space is air conditioned, make sure windows and doors are closed.

·         All building temperatures centrally controlled will be raised.  Loads will be checked and additional temperature changes may be required in order to meet the 1 MW demand reduction Met Ed is seeking.

The Demand Response Program is an agreement between the University and a Curtailment Service Provider (Comverge) in which if we agree to shed electrical load during times when the electrical grid is stressed the University will be paid for the amount of reduction agreed upon and successfully accomplished. The reason for these types of programs is so that generators or suppliers of electricity don’t have to energize old and inefficient plants to handle temporary spikes in demand that threaten the grid. These periods are usually caused by very hot summer days when air conditioners are running continuously.

Thank you for your continued cooperation.

Tom Green, PE, director,  Facilities Energy Management and Campus Utilities
