College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty First Thursday:  Jay Baglia, assistant professor, Speech & Theatre Department, will present “Beyond Conception:  (In)fertility & the New Reproductive Technologies in the News” this morning at 11 a.m. in Sharadin 120.  The paper upon which this presentation is based is a discourse analysis of over 75 lengthy news stories which include fertility as a major theme.  In this analysis he discovered five themes:  emotion, economics, metaphors of luck and chance, God, and biological destiny.  All are welcome!

The
Off-Campus Advisory Council (OCAC) is hosting its third annual Holiday Marketplace today, 11 a.m.- 6 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room and Formal Dining Room of the McFarland Student Union building. This event is free and open to the public. More than 40 vendors will showcase their products including; jewelry, student art, clay art, scarves, homemade soaps, wooden utensils, candles, glassware and African art.  

While shopping or selling their merchandise, patrons and vendors can enjoy some relaxing holiday music provided by the Kutztown Middle School jazz band, KU musicians, Bear Voices and other individuals from the community. In addition to enjoying great products and great music, people in attendance can also enter to win a Holiday Treasures Gift Basket. These baskets are prepared by faculty, staff, students and community members. All proceeds from the entries benefit KUBoK (Kutztown University and Borough of Kutztown) Neighborhood Watch, a volunteer coalition of community residents and KU students, faculty and staff working and walking together to maintain a safe and friendly community.

Belsnickel to spread joy at Christmas on the Farm this Saturday -  Join us this Saturday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center (PGCHG) for “Christmas on the Farm.” This free event shares the many holiday traditions of the Pennsylvania German culture. There will be various activities for children such as visiting with farm animals, cookie decorating, pinecone bird feeder making, and much more! And Belsnickel, the Pennsylvania German counterpart to St. Nick, will visit with the children in the schoolhouse, making certain that they’re on their best behavior.

The Brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon are eager to announce the memorial blood drive that they are holding in honor of Michael D. Nusca. The blood drive will be held on Monday December 6th in the Multi Purpose Room in the Student Union Building from 10am-4:30pm. If anyone is interested in making an appointment, they are starting at 10am with every appointment continuing in fifteen minute increments. The Lavender Graduates celebration will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the GLBTQ Resource Center, OM 4. The Community Outreach Center (COC) would like to offer everyone an opportunity to sponsor an underprivileged COUL kid for the holidays. $5 will provide a holiday gift to each child from the Berks County Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Agency. Drop by the COC MSU 281 anytime from now until the end of the semester to make your donation, or check out our table at the Holiday Market Place on Dec. 2. Our goal is to sponsor all 115 kids. The Community Outreach Center is collecting gift card donations for the forgotten teens at the Olivet Boys and Girls Club in Reading. Gift cards should be for small amounts for stores like Walmart, Target or Kmart. Anything you can give is greatly appreciated. Donations can be dropped off in the Community Outreach Center, MSU 281. Please identify dollar amount somewhere on the gift card. Donations accepted until Dec. 10.  Please help make this holiday special for a teen!

WANTED!  Kutztown University Council of Trustees is searching for a new Student Trustee. You are qualified if you are a full-time undergraduate student and have completed 32 or more credits by the beginning of the 2011 Fall Semester, are in good standing and have a GPA of at least a 2.5, and will graduate no sooner than May of 2013. The Council of Trustees, the governing body of the University, is composed of an eleven-member board, one of whom is an undergraduate student. The Student Trustee is a full voting member of the Council.
