Announcements

Until they come home… We want you! This group is open to anyone that has a significant other serving in the Armed Forces.  We are planning to send care packages, letters and fun things to the soldiers.  This is also an opportunity to support and relate to others that are going through a similar experience missing a service member. Join us in the new Women's Center Oasis in Old Main 3, Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. For more information, please check out: http://www.kutztown.edu/admin/womens/activities.htm

The Fourth annual Relay for Life of Kutztown University. It will be held Friday, April 23-24, 2010 on the DMZ from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m. We will celebrate survivors, remember those we’ve lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease that hopefully, one day, people will no longer fear. Since its inception, the Relay for Life of Kutztown University has raised more than $40,000 in the fight against cancer. These funds are valuable to providing the research, education, advocacy, and patient services needed to help cancer patients and their families. There are many ways you can get involved:

We hope that you will consider joining us for this special event that is sure to bring the entire KU community together for a great cause. If you would like more information about Relay, please contact Aubrey Showers (ashow190@live.kutztown.edu) or Jodi Torock (jodi.torock@cancer.org, 610-921-2329).

Free KU Presents! interactive talk on early cinema music for all KU students, faculty and staff on Friday, Feb. 5 from 4- 5:30 p.m. in Schaeffer Auditorium. Rick Benjamin, Music Director for the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, will be giving an interactive talk on early cinema music.  The Orchestra will join him to play specific scenes from the evening's feature film (The Mark of Zorro!) to demonstrate methods of historic underscoring. He will also take questions from the audience.

Rick Benjamin, has built a career on the discovery and performance of lost American music from the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He is the founder and director of the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, which uses his extraordinary 10,000-title collection of antique theater and dance orchestra music (c.1875-1925) as the basis of its repertoire.  Mr. Benjamin is also an energetic researcher of music for silent films; he has unearthed the original orchestral accompaniments to many of the great motion pictures of the 1910s and '20s, which he conducts at film festivals around the world.

For information on the entire evening of our performance of the PRO with The Mark of Zorro! including dinner and a free pre-concert activity including your fellow faculty, go to: http://www.kutztown.edu/activities/kupas/rick_benjamin_orchestra.aspx

College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty First Thursday! Dean Ballas,  Assistant Professor of Communication Design, will present “Visual Art Distance Learning”  on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. in 120 Sharadin.  Professor Ballas is in the process of developing an online version of the Historical Survey of Graphic Design course.  We have a chance to explore how students enrolled in an online course engage with interactive content as opposed to the traditional delivery found in an on ground classroom.  Will there be a better understanding of the course content through virtual delivery?  Lets discuss!
