Please encourage your students to come to the Galleria in South Dining Hall on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. for the LinKU Open House.  LinKU stands for "Leaders in Kutztown" and is a great way to for students to expand their leadership skills.  Workshops for LinKU meet several times a semester and topics range from teambuilding and problem-solving to goal setting, event planning, and communication.  This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about this exciting program here at KU!

The Kutztown University Academic Achievement Awards are presented to a select group of senior students who have achieved exceptional individual achievements in specified areas.
The awards were established through a generous gift provided by Dr. Carlson R. Chambliss, who served as a member of the Kutztown University faculty from 1970 until 2003.  

 

Faculty and staff at KU are strongly encouraged to nominate students worthy of consideration for this prestigious award. The areas of individual achievement are: 

        a) Successfully completed research projects.

        b) Original artwork of high quality.

        c) Artistic performances (music, chorus, drama, etc) of high quality.

        d) Original writing in literature or meritorious writing in other fields.

        e) Noteworthy achievements in athletics.

        f) Outstanding service to the Kutztown University community.

Housing & Residential Services is now recruiting for Community Assistants for the 2010-2011 academic year! 
We are looking for creative, enthusiastic, responsible and dedicated individuals to serve as community leaders in our residence halls.  Minimum requirements: 2.5 GPA, good standing with the university, full-time enrollment, making academic progress, and residence on campus for the 2010-2011 year.

The Sociology Comprehensive Exam for Spring 2010 graduates will begin Feb. 8 with the distribution of the Theory Section questions.  The Methods Section (March 19) and the Objective Section (April 17) will follow.  Students planning to take any or all sections of the Exam spring 2010 must sign-up with the Department secretary, Mrs. Lori Dahlquist, by Feb. 5.  To sign up, stop by the Anthropology and Sociology Department Office in 467 Old Main from 8 a.m.-noon or 1- 4 p.m. weekdays or e-mail ldahlqui@kutztown.edu.

TB Testing – students who wish to obtain a TB test on campus in February needs to submit their preregistration card to the administrative office in the Health & Wellness Center no later than Thursday, Jan. 28.   The non-refundable $10 fee will be placed on the student’s account after the test has been administered.  Students whose last name starts with letters A-M should attend Feb. 2 for the test and return on Feb. 4 for the results.  Students with the last name starting with N-Z should attend Feb. 23 for the test and return on Feb 25 for the results.  All testing is done in the McFarland Student Union Multipurpose Room from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  No appointment is needed.  Questions?  Please call Lois at 610-683-4943.

Information meeting for KU Mexico Sketchbook Course 2010 is today at 11 a.m. in the Communication Design Conference Room, Sharadin 312, above the Art Gallery.

In May 2010, the Communication Design Department is offering a Mexico sketchbook course. Students travel to the charming colonial cities of Guanajuato and Queretaro and visit the amazing capitol, Mexico City. Excursions include climbing the pyramids of Teotihuacan, a visit to an underground silver mine, and the birthplace of muralist Diego Rivera.  Each student completes a sketchbook documenting the travel experience. Students can earn 1 to 3 credits.

The first show of the semester is going up in the gallery tonight! Spring 2010 is getting started with a really great show in the Student Union Art Gallery. We are currently showing "Welcome to Planet Sarajevo" featuring prints and mixed media work by Jessie Horning. The pieces are inspired by her recent trip to Sarajevo. There is a catered opening reception on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 7-8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Kutztown invitational NCAA women's bowling tournament to be held January 29-31at Hiester Lanes, Reading, Pa. 28 teams will be present, including 15 of top 20 currently NCAA ranked teams. This is the largest event on the NCAA women's bowling schedule and the 2nd annual hosted by KU. Kutztown is currently ranked #9 in the nation.

 

Starting times each day for competition are noon on Friday, Jan. 29, 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, and 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 31. Admission is free and we would love to have the support of our home fans since we spend most of our competitions on the road.

Join Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) for the next in their six Seeking Solutions Series on Wednesday, Feb. 3.  The Seeking Solutions Series program begins at noon with a luncheon.

The program continues at 2 p.m. with president and chief operating officer of New Century Bank, Richard Ehst.  He will be speaking on "Cash Flow and Capital in Recessionary Times."

At 3 p.m. professor of accounting and finance, Dr. CJ Rhoads, will present her research on "Surviving to Thrive: What is different about companies that flourish during recessions?"

At 4 p.m., a panel on "Funding capital and relieving the cash crunch: What's the answer?" with

Keep your promise and reach your goal! New Year's Resolution event Thursday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the McFarland Student Union Multipurpose room. The Campus Wellness Committee and Health Promotion Services have joined together to assist faculty, staff and students in keeping their New Year’s resolutions. There will be presentations, assessments, tips and prizes!

 

Loosen up with Wellness BINGO hosted by the KU Health Ambassadors from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and relax with student performances from 11 a.m.- noon.  Receive free health assessments: Link Chiropractic’s Wellness Assessment, blood pressure and BMI readings, and a fitness assessment. Sample healthy snacks from AVI and Good Eatz while you collect tips on healthy eating, work-outs, stress management, emergency preparedness, smoking cessation, and party tips from the President's Round Table.

 

Your questions on healthy living answered by The American Hear Association, American Diabetes Association, and Berks County Solid Waste Authority about recycling.

The Biology Department has recently been notified of the death of Ethel M. Hiester, mother of Dr. Ronald R. Rhein, chair and professor Emeritus of Biology.

 

The viewing will be held at Lutz Funeral Home Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Avenue, Mt. Penn on Friday, Jan. 29 from 10–11 a.m.  Services to follow at 11 a.m.  Interment is at Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring, PA.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Berks County Office of Aging or their Meals on Wheels program.  Both should be mailed to 633 Court Street, Reading, PA 19601.  For the Meals on Wheels, specify such on memo of check.
