
“Absence is Presence: Matthew Daub’s Kempton” -- Nationally renowned watercolor artist and professor of Fine Arts, Matthew Daub will deliver an illustrated Chambliss Faculty Research Awards lecture on Monday, April 18, at 4:30 p.m. in the McFarland Student Union’s Alumni Auditorium. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend this fascinating presentation.
The title of the lecture, “Absence is Presence: Matthew Daub’s Kempton,” is taken from an essay by Carl Little on Daub’s work.
Daub has been a professor of Fine Arts at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania since 1987. His watercolor paintings and drawings have been widely exhibited for over three decades, with more than 20 one-person exhibitions at galleries and museums throughout the United States including the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania, and the Evansville Museum in Indiana. Daub’s works have been included in numerous invitational exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and in 2010, the 185th Invitational Exhibition of American Art at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Community Outreach Center The Race Against Racism committee is looking for donations and runners for our 5th annual Race Against Racism.The race will be held on Apr. 9 at 9 a.m. This is a 5k run/1k walk, the 1k is considered a "fun walk" which is a great opportunity to get the kids involved. The committee is hoping to get at least 200 runners involved, as well as faculty sponsor support for runners. It is $15 for individual student runners and $25 for all other participants. Dr. Daniel Haxall, assistant professor in the Department of Fine Arts, will present “Making Concrete Improvisations: The Work of Art History” on Thursday, Apr. 7, at 11 a.m. in the Sharadin Art Building, room 120. Dr. Haxall will discuss his role in the exhibition, Concrete Improvisations: Collages and Sculpture by Esteban Vicente, currently on view at the Grey Art Gallery of New York University. A show that will tour internationally, Concrete Improvisations is the first exhibition devoted to the paper collages and wooden sculptures of the Spanish-born abstract expressionist. In addition, Dr. Haxall will discuss his employment at various museums, such as the National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum, explaining the types of work available to students of art and how these institutions operate and plan exhibitions. The Association of Childhood Education International and Kappa Delta Pi have joined forces again in 2011 to collect items for Lehigh Valley Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital's pediatric units, during the month of April. These items are to help sick children pass the time while they are in the hospital and help keep their mind off of what they are going through. The items can include books, toys, stuffed animals, dolls, trucks, building blocks, legos, coloring books with crayons, games, card games, Sudoku books, markers, puzzles, etc. anything children of all ages would enjoy. These gifts really help to put a smile on the children's faces and every donation is greatly appreciated. The boxes for receiving the donations are located on the second floor of Beekey Education Hall, office 210. Members of both organizations will be visiting with the children at all three hospitals on select weekends during the month of April to spend time with the children and their parents, read, do activities (created by our education majors), as well as bring the donated items. The Kutztown University Planetarium one-hour laser light shows run through Thursday, Apr. 7. The planetarium, located in the Grim Science Building room 100, hosts a variety of laser light shows to the music of the Beatles, Madonna, Pink Floyd, Crystal Method, Metallica, and others. The first show, Laser Beatles, is at 6 p.m., followed by two more at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. The laser light shows are open to the public, with tickets on sale for $3 at MSU, at the door of the show, or online for an additional processing fee. Kutztown University and the Borough of Kutztown are pleased to announce an open application process for a Student ambassador non-voting position within the Borough Council for the Borough of Kutztown as well as to the Mayor of Kutztown.
